Why I Love Asuncion
Stepping off a plane into Asuncion, the gentle caress of the subtropical breeze and the vibrant energy of the city wrap around you like a familiar hug. It’s the perfect collision of urban life and rich history. One morning I found myself sipping yerba mate in a bustling plaza, the sunlight dancing off the pink limestone of the Palacio de los López. That moment, I realized why I adore Asuncion — it’s where you savor the little things and connect deeply with the rhythm of local life. Somehow, the city always feels like a homecoming, welcoming and warm.

Where to Eat
You have to try Lido Bar — it’s a local institution. Their empanadas are heavenly, crispy pockets of joy, and it’s right near the Plaza de los Héroes. Don’t leave without eating at Bar San Roque; the homestyle Paraguayan dishes like surubí grilled fish are unforgettable. For something sweet, Café de Acá serves a delightful cocido quemado paired with chipa that you’ll dream about. Expect to spend around $10-20 per meal.
Honest Local Tips
Watch the traffic! Drivers can be a bit aggressive, so be extra cautious crossing streets, even at pedestrian crossings.
Carry small change. Many small vendors and buses don’t accept large bills, so it’s handy to have smaller denominations.
Stay hydrated. The heat can sneak up on you, especially in summer. Carry a reusable water bottle.
Language barrier. English isn't widely spoken, so having a bit of Spanish (or a translation app) goes a long way.
Beware of pickpockets. Like many cities, keep an eye on your belongings in crowded places, especially the markets.
Sun protection is key. A mistake I made initially was forgetting sunscreen. The sun can be intense, and you'll thank yourself later.
Getting Around
Buses are the most cost-effective way to navigate, costing just a few cents. Taxis are plentiful, but make sure to agree on a fare beforehand if they don’t have a meter. Rideshare apps like Uber or Bolt are ideal for convenience and safety. Remember to avoid hailing cabs off the street late at night — use an app instead.
Is Asuncion Worth It?
Absolutely, for the adventurous soul. Asuncion is perfect if you love untapped destinations and diving deep into local culture. It might not be for those craving luxury shopping or high-end nightlife, but if you’re into rich history, vibrant street life, and heartwarming local connections, you’ll fall in love with Paraguay’s capital. I’d go back in a heartbeat for those sunset strolls and a daily dose of tereré with new friends.
