Why I Love Bergen

You know that feeling when you walk off a plane and immediately breathe in the crisp, fresh air? That was Bergen for me. Nestled between seven mountains and embracing a glorious waterfront, Bergen radiates that quintessential Nordic charm that just envelops you with coziness. The first time I wandered through Bryggen, with its wooden Hanseatic buildings leaning into the history-soaked alleyways, I felt like I’d stumbled straight into a fairy tale. Little cafes, the scent of cinnamon in the air, and locals wrapped in their laughter and stories — it’s these small, heartwarming moments that make Bergen special for me.

>My Favourite Things To Do

Fjord Cruise

Bergenhus Fortress

Stroll around the Bergenhus Fortress, one of the oldest and best-preserved fortresses in Norway. I loved wandering through the halls of this medieval structure, feeling a tangible connection to Bergen’s past. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Pingvinen. It’s a cozy spot serving traditional Norwegian comfort food. Their lamb stew is my go-to, and it's reasonably priced too. Don't leave without eating at Lysverket for a modern twist on Nordic cuisine — their fish dishes are divine, albeit on the pricier side. For a quick bite, Krok og Krinkel serves warm pastries and soups in a wonderfully snug atmosphere.

>Honest Local Tips

Embrace the Weather: Bergen’s weather is famously unpredictable. Always pack a waterproof jacket even if the morning sun is shining.

Avoid Peak Tourist Times: Visit Bryggen early in the morning. Around 8 a.m., you’ll have the colorful buildings virtually to yourself, making it perfect for peaceful exploration and great photos.

Use Bergen's Public Transport App: Download the Skyss app for seamless travel around Bergen. It's practical and saves you time figuring out routes.

Tap Water Is Perfectly Fine: Skip buying bottled water; Bergen’s tap water is clean and delicious.

Be Prepared for High Prices: I learned the hard way that prices for basics can be steep. Plan your budget accordingly; dining out adds up!

>Getting Around

Getting around Bergen is a breeze with its efficient public transport. The Bybanen light rail and buses cover most areas; just grab a ticket via the Skyss app. Walking is delightful and safe, especially around city center. Taxis are pricier but reliable — keep cash or a card handy, as some taxis don't accept all foreign cards. Watch out for taxis with uncovered meters to avoid surprise charges.

>Is Bergen Worth It?

Absolutely, Bergen is perfect for nature lovers, history buffs, and anyone enchanted by Nordic culture. The city’s blend of picturesque landscapes, vibrant history, and warm locals makes it unforgettable. If you’re not a fan of rain or prefer bustling nightlife, Bergen might not capture your heart. But for me, the serene beauty and cozy indulgences are more than enough to make me return.
