Bologna

Why I Love Bologna

There’s something about Bologna that just feels like a warm embrace. The moment you step onto its sun-dappled streets, you're greeted by the comforting scent of freshly baked bread mingling with the rich aroma of espresso. I remember my first morning there, sipping a cappuccino under the iconic terracotta porticoes, watching locals on bicycles weave past with a nonchalance only Italians can master. Bologna is a city that exudes authenticity, where every corner reveals a hidden gem, whether it's a bustling market, a centuries-old trattoria, or a vibrant student quarter. You'll fall for its unpretentious charm just like I did.

Quick Facts

Bologna

Getting There

Flying into Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport is the easiest option. From London, it’s a short two-hour flight, with budget airlines like Ryanair often offering great deals. If you're coming from New York, expect about an 8-hour flight with a layover in a major European city. Dubai flights are around 6 hours non-stop. Don’t forget that Italy is part of the Schengen area — most travelers from the US, Canada, and Australia don’t need a visa for stays under 90 days, but double-check for your nationality just in case.

Where to Stay

Budget (under $80/night)

Ostello We_Bologna is my go-to recommendation for budget travelers. It’s more than just a hostel; it has this vibrant community vibe with a fantastic common area where I met travelers from all over the world. It’s a perfect pick for solo travelers or groups looking for a friendly, social atmosphere. Check availability on Expedia

Mid-Range ($80-200/night)

For a mid-range option, Hotel Metropolitan is unbeatable. Nestled right in the heart of the historic center, it combines contemporary design with classic comforts. I loved relaxing on their rooftop terrace after a day of exploration, sipping a Spritz as the sun dipped behind the city’s red rooftops. Check availability on Expedia

Luxury ($200+/night)

If you’re after luxury, Grand Hotel Majestic "Già Baglioni" is an absolute dream. This opulent hotel is a slice of history with modern amenities. Each room is a blend of art and comfort, perfect for those who want to indulge. The service is exceptional, making you feel like royalty during your stay. Check availability on Expedia

>My Favourite Things To Do

Explore Piazza Maggiore

One of my favorite things to do here is simply sit in Piazza Maggiore. Right in the heart of the city, this bustling square is perfect for people-watching and soaking in the Bolognese way of life. Surrounded by historic buildings like the Basilica di San Petronio, it’s a fantastic place to start your exploration. Book with Viator

Climb Asinelli Tower

You absolutely have to climb the Asinelli Tower. It’s a bit of a workout, but the panoramic view of Bologna’s red rooftops and rolling hills is worth every step. It’s the best way to get a feel for the layout of the city and capture breathtaking photos. Book with GetYourGuide

Visit the Archiginnasio

Don’t miss the Archiginnasio, once the main building of the University of Bologna. The anatomical theater is a highlight, a testament to Bologna's academic heritage. Walking through the shelves of old books, I felt like time had stood still. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Trattoria Anna Maria for some of the best tortellini in brodo you'll ever taste. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, like eating at a family gathering. For pizza, do yourself a favor and visit Pizzeria Ranzani13, with its lively vibe and delectable thin crusts. Don't leave without eating at Osteria dell’Orsa — their tagliatelle al ragù is legendary, and it won’t break the bank.

>Honest Local Tips

Beware of the Lunch Hour: Many restaurants close after lunch around 3 PM and don’t reopen until dinner. Plan your meals accordingly to avoid missing out.

Market Shopping: Visit Mercato di Mezzo in the morning for fresh produce and local delicacies. It’s less crowded and the vendors are super friendly.

Mind the Bikes: Bologna is very bike-friendly, which means bikes everywhere! Keep an eye out when strolling through the streets to avoid an accidental collision.

Take the Train: If you have time, hop on a short train ride to Modena or Parma. These nearby cities offer more culinary and cultural treats.

Bring a Bottle: There are water fountains all over the city with clean drinking water. Bringing a refillable bottle will save you euros and the environment.

Mistake I Made: I underestimated the power of Italian coffee. Don’t get a cappuccino after 11 AM unless you want to stick out as a tourist!

>Getting Around

The best way to explore Bologna is on foot; you’ll discover so many nooks and crannies. For longer distances, TPER buses are reliable and affordable — make sure to buy tickets at tabaccherias or online. Uber isn't available, so grab a local taxi using the app TaxiClick. Bikes are available for rent across the city if you prefer pedaling through the porticoes. Watch out for occasional scams from overly enterprising taxi drivers; always ask for an estimated fare upfront.

>Is Bologna Worth It?

Absolutely! Bologna is a hidden gem ideal for foodies, history buffs, and anyone in search of authenticity. It doesn’t have the overwhelming tourist crowds of Rome or Florence, which means you get to experience Italy in a more genuine, unhurried way. If you love soaking in culture and indulging in the best food you’ve ever tasted, you’ll want to return again and again. Those seeking pulsating nightlife might find it calmer than expected, but for me, that’s part of Bologna’s charm. Let’s plan our return trip together!
