Why I Love Bucharest

Walking through Bucharest, I feel like I’m in the paradoxical heart of old and new Europe. Imagine sipping a frothy cappuccino in a hipster café, only to step outside into the grandeur of communist architecture that tells stories of a complex past. The first time I sat on a bench in Cişmigiu Gardens, with the scent of linden trees mixing with the distant tunes of a street musician, I felt entirely at ease. It’s a city of contrasts — from the hustle of Lipscani to the haunting silence of the People's Palace. Each visit wraps me in a warm embrace of culture and history.

Quick Facts

Getting There

From London, you can fly directly to Henri Coandă International Airport in about 3 hours with low-cost airlines like Wizz Air or Ryanair, making it super affordable. If you’re coming from New York, expect a longer journey with layovers, typically around 11-12 hours with airlines like Lufthansa or Turkish Airlines. Check if your nationality requires a visa — many can enter visa-free for up to 90 days.

My Favourite Things To Do

Explore the Old Town

One of my favorite things to do here is wander through Lipscani, the historic old town. The cobblestone streets are lined with vibrant bars and eclectic shops. It feels like stepping into a time machine with a modern twist. Book with Viator

Visit the Palace of the Parliament

This colossal building is surreal in its size and history. A guided tour takes you through its grand halls, and you can’t help but marvel at its opulence while considering its historical implications. Book with GetYourGuide

Relax at Herăstrău Park

I love spending afternoons at Herăstrău Park. Renting a boat or cycling around the lake is the perfect way to unwind. The Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum nearby is a unique glimpse into rural Romanian life. Book with Viator

Where to Eat

You have to try Caru' cu Bere for that genuine Bucharest vibe. It’s classic, with hearty Romanian dishes and live music. Order the sarmale — you won’t regret it. Mid-range prices.

Don't leave without eating at Shift Pub. It’s a trendy spot that blends traditional with contemporary. The garden seating in summer is ideal, and their beef salad is a must-try. Budget-friendly.

For something special, head to The Artist. This place reinvents Romanian cuisine with an artistic flair. Try their tasting menu for a splurge. It’s a bit pricey but totally worth the experience.

Honest Local Tips

Mind the Taxi Scams: Always use registered taxis like Speed Taxi or use ride-sharing apps like Bolt. Haggling can sometimes lead to disputes.

Experience Local Markets: Piața Obor is bustling and vibrant — a real authentic slice of Bucharest life where you can try mici (grilled sausages) fresh from the stall.

Learn a Few Basics in Romanian: Though most people speak English, knowing a couple of phrases makes interactions more enjoyable. Plus, locals appreciate the effort!

Sunday Strolls in Parks: Bucharest's parks come alive on Sundays. Cişmigiu and Herăstrău Parks are perfect for mingling with locals or having a peaceful read.

Historical Context Helps: Reading up on Romania’s history, especially the communist era, will deepen your appreciation for what you see around you.

Avoid Peak Summer: Bucharest can get swelteringly hot in July and August, making it a bit uncomfortable for exploring. Aim for late spring or early autumn.

Getting Around

Grab the STB app for easy navigation through Bucharest’s public transport system — it's efficient and budget-friendly. A day pass for the metro is super cheap and can save on pesky cab fares. Be cautious about pickpockets, especially in crowded areas.

Is Bucharest Worth It?

Bucharest is perfect for history buffs, culture enthusiasts, and those who enjoy a city with layers and stories. Its quirks and contrasts offer a genuine adventure. However, if you’re seeking serene countryside vistas or a purely touristy destination, it might not be what you’re after. For me, it's a city that calls me back time and again, revealing more of itself with each visit.
