Why I Love Davao

You know that feeling when you smell fresh fruits and it instantly lifts your mood? That’s Davao for me. There’s this vibrant buzz in the air mixed with the scent of durian – an acquired taste, I know, but give it a shot. My first evening in Davao, I watched the sun dip behind Mount Apo, painting the sky in shades of pink and orange. It’s like the city gives you a warm hug. The people are as friendly as they come, with genuine smiles that make you feel at home. The perfect blend of urban life and nature, Davao has something special for each of us.

Quick Facts

Davao

Getting There

Flying into Davao is pretty straightforward. Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO) welcomes flights from major hubs such as Manila, Cebu, and international locales like Singapore. For cheap flights, keep an eye on Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines sales. From New York, expect a layover and around 18 hours of travel time. Visa-wise, most Western country citizens can enter visa-free for 30 days.

Where to Stay

Budget (under $80/night)

I stayed at The Bourke Hotel, and it's a gem for budget travelers. It’s clean, cozy, and the staff treats you like family. Perfect for solo travelers and friends. With its central location, you can easily walk to street food stalls and the People’s Park. Check availability on Expedia

Mid-Range ($80-200/night)

The Seda Abreeza is where comfort meets convenience. It’s got modern amenities and is steps away from the Abreeza Mall, perfect if you’re like me and can't resist shopping sprees on rainy afternoons. The pool is great for unwinding after a day of exploring. Check availability on Expedia

Luxury ($200+/night)

For the ultimate splurge, you can't beat the Marco Polo Davao. The service is exceptional, and the breakfast buffet? Oh, it's a feast. A perfect retreat for couples wanting a bit of pampering or anyone celebrating a special occasion. Check availability on Expedia

>My Favourite Things To Do

Climbing Mount Apo

One of my favourite things to do here is tackle Mount Apo. It’s the Philippines’ tallest peak, but don’t let that scare you. The trek is challenging yet rewarding with panoramic views and lush greenery. Perfect for adventure seekers! Book with Viator

Visiting the Philippine Eagle Center

You have to visit the Philippine Eagle Center. It’s a conservation marvel, and seeing the majestic eagles up close is both humbling and exhilarating. Great for families and wildlife lovers. Book with GetYourGuide

Exploring Samal Island

Samal Island is just a quick ferry ride away, and spending a day here is like stepping into paradise. The beaches are pristine, the water crystal-clear—perfect for snorkeling and a bit of sunbathing. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Lachi's for their unforgettable sans rival cake. The casual vibe makes it a perfect spot for a sweet escape. Don’t leave without eating at Marina Tuna for the freshest grilled tuna belly – a bit pricier, but worth every peso. And for authentic Filipino street food, head to Roxas Avenue Night Market. It’s lively, bustling, and easy on the wallet.

>Honest Local Tips

Try the Durian at least once: It might smell pungent, but Davao is the durian capital, so give it a shot!

Bring mosquito repellent: Especially if you're heading out to nature spots or staying on Samal Island.

Respect local customs: Davao is pretty conservative, so it's respectful to dress modestly in certain areas.

Safety first: Davao is generally safe, but watch your belongings in crowded places like markets.

Book tours in advance: Popular activities, especially during peak season, can fill up quickly.

Mistake I made: Not carrying enough cash. While many places accept cards, local spots and markets might not.

>Getting Around

Grab is your friend in Davao – it’s reliable and safer than hailing random taxis. Jeepneys are an adventure and super affordable, but avoid rush hour unless you're up for really cozy rides. Most drivers are honest, but clarify fares just in case.

>Is Davao Worth It?

Absolutely. Davao is a gem of a destination for those who love nature, adventure, and the warmth of local culture. It’s perfect for families, solo travelers, and couples seeking a mix of excitement and relaxation. If you’re looking for a party scene, it might not be your vibe, but I promise the sunsets and the smiles will win you over. Would I go back? In a heartbeat.
