Why I Love Dubrovnik
I can still feel the Adriatic breeze on my face when I think of Dubrovnik. There’s something utterly magical about walking the ancient city walls, with the sea stretching endlessly on one side and terracotta roofs spilling out on the other. One of my standout memories is ducking into a cozy konoba (traditional eatery) to escape a surprise rain shower and discovering the most comforting seafood risotto. That's Dubrovnik for you — full of surprises and simple pleasures. From its charming old town to the breathtaking views at every corner, this city feels like stepping into a sun-drenched fairy tale.

Flying into Dubrovnik is a breeze. Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) is well-connected, with direct flights from major cities like London, New York (with a stop), and Dubai. If you're coming from London, expect about a 3-hour direct flight. New York requires a connection in a European hub, such as London or Frankfurt, totaling around 11 hours. Visas aren’t necessary for US, UK, and EU passport holders for stays less than 90 days, but always double-check the latest requirements before your trip.

>My Favourite Things To DoWalk the City Walls
One of my absolute favorite things to do here is to stroll along the city walls. The views over the Adriatic are unreal, especially at sunset. It’s like walking through history with a backdrop that changes with every step. Book with Viator
Explore Lokrum Island
A 15-minute boat ride from the old port takes you to Lokrum Island, a lush paradise with peacocks and wild rabbits. Hike, swim, or just laze under the trees. It's the perfect escape from the crowds. Book with GetYourGuide
Visit Fort Lovrijenac
Dubbed the “Gibraltar of Dubrovnik,” this fortress offers a slice of Game of Thrones history and breathtaking views of the city. It’s a steep climb, but so worth it! Book with Viator
>Where to EatYou have to try Proto for an upscale take on traditional Croatian dishes. Killer seafood right in the heart of the old town (around $50 per person).
Don't leave without eating at Lady Pi-Pi, especially if you're a fan of grilled meats. Trust me, the terrace view makes the wait worthwhile (about $20-30 per person).
For something casual, grab a bite at Barba. They serve fantastic seafood street food — the octopus burger is a must-try and it's super affordable! (under $15)
Skip the midday heat: The old town can get packed and sweltering in peak season. Visit early morning or late afternoon for a more pleasant experience.
ATM fees add up: Stick to using local ATMs like OTP or Zagrebačka to avoid hefty international fees.
Buy tickets in advance: Popular attractions like the city walls and cable car sell out fast. Grab your tickets online to dodge disappointment.
Buses can be tricky: Always carry coins for bus fare as drivers rarely have change, and it’s cash only.
Island hopping delight: Don’t skip the Elafiti Islands. They’re less crowded and offer a more relaxed vibe than the city.
Crowded beaches: Banje Beach is popular but can be overwhelmingly busy. Try Sveti Jakov for a quieter experience.
Tipping culture: Leaving a 10% tip is appreciated and adds to the friendly Croatian hospitality.
>Getting AroundDubrovnik is super walkable, particularly the old town. For longer distances, the bus system is affordable and efficient; the Libertas app is handy for schedules and routes. Taxis are pricier, so use Uber for a cheaper, reliable option. Keep an eye out for unmarked taxi drivers, as scams can happen. Renting a car isn’t necessary unless you're venturing outside the city.
>Is Dubrovnik Worth It?Absolutely. Dubrovnik is perfect for history buffs, Game of Thrones fans, and anyone in search of stunning coastlines and rich culture. If you're not fond of crowds, just plan your visit carefully around peak times. Would I go back? In a heartbeat. There's so much more to explore and every visit feels like opening a new chapter in a well-loved book.
