Geneva

Why I Love Geneva

You walk along the shores of Lake Geneva, and the air smells richly of fresh alpine air and roasted chestnuts from nearby street vendors. For me, Geneva is a city where understated elegance meets the stunning beauty of nature. I remember sipping a perfect espresso by the Jet d’Eau, its spray misting the edge of my guidebook. Geneva feels like a calm embrace — it’s the quiet moments like these that draw me in. It’s not just the picturesque landscape, but the city’s international spirit, the palpable hum of diplomacy, and that feeling of being at the crossroads of the world.

Quick Facts

Geneva

Getting There

Flying into Geneva is a breeze. The Geneva Airport (GVA) is well-connected, with direct flights from major cities like London (1.5 hours), New York (8 hours), and Dubai (7 hours). Airlines like EasyJet and Swiss offer competitively priced flights. Good news, most travelers from the US, EU, and UK don't need a visa for short stays.

>My Favourite Things To Do

Explore Old Town

One of my favourite things to do here is wander around Geneva's Old Town. The cobblestone streets and medieval architecture make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Don't miss the Cathédrale St. Pierre for panoramic views. Book with Viator

Visit the United Nations Office

You really can't skip a tour of the United Nations Office at the Palais des Nations. It's eye-opening to stand where so much history has unfolded. Make sure to book in advance! Book with GetYourGuide

>Where to Eat

You have to try the fondue at Café du Soleil; it’s creamy, rich, and surprisingly filling. The atmosphere is warm, and it feels like dining with family.

Don't leave without eating at Alcieo, an authentic Italian bistro. The risotto is divine, and the decor is a charming throwback to old-world Italy.

For a quick, delicious bite, Inglewood serves one of the best burgers I've ever had. The laid-back vibe and generous portions are perfect for lunch.

>Honest Local Tips

Public transport is fantastic — and with the Geneva Transport Card, it’s free for hotel guests! It covers buses, trams, and even the yellow water taxis, Mouettes.

Sunday closures are real — most shops close, so plan accordingly. Use the day to explore parks or take a day trip.

Sample the chocolate — even if you think it’s touristy. Geneva’s chocolatiers are some of the best.

Currency exchange is easier than you think — ATMs are everywhere, and credit cards are widely accepted. But keep some francs for small vendors.

Don’t ignore the suburbs — Carouge is a lovely neighborhood with an artsy vibe and worth a visit.

Geneva is pricey — I learned this the hard way. Consider buying groceries and picnicking by the lake.

>Getting Around

Geneva’s public transport system is excellent. Download the SBB Mobile app for easy navigation and real-time updates. Taxis can be pricey—stick to trams and buses when possible. Watch out for common scams at the main train station like fake petitions or overcharging.

>Is Geneva Worth It?

Absolutely. Geneva is perfect for culture enthusiasts, history buffs, and anyone who loves the combination of city life and natural beauty. If you're looking for nightlife or budget travel, it might not be your top spot, but for a serene and enriching getaway, I'd go back in a heartbeat.
