Why I Love Graz
Oh, Graz! I fell in love with its mix of contemporary art and centuries-old charm. The first time I wandered through the narrow cobblestone streets of the Altstadt (Old Town), I was enchanted by the medieval buildings and vibrant street cafes. Picture this: you’re enjoying a sunny afternoon in a hidden courtyard, sipping a strong Austrian coffee while a street musician plays a gentle waltz. It’s the perfect European daydream come to life. From the top of Schlossberg, the view takes your breath away, revealing a stunning panorama of red-tiled roofs against lush green hills. Graz, with its fusion of historic elegance and fresh innovation, captures my heart every time.

Getting There
Flying into Graz is pretty straightforward. Graz Airport (GRZ) is small but functional, with direct flights from major European cities like Frankfurt, Munich, and Zurich. If you're coming from outside Europe, consider flying into Vienna or Munich and catching a train. From Vienna, it’s a scenic 2.5-hour train ride. No visa is needed for EU citizens, but others should double-check Schengen visa requirements.

One of my favorite things to do is marvel at the futuristic architecture of Kunsthaus Graz. Its quirky design, known as the "Friendly Alien," is a must-see. Inside, you'll find a plethora of contemporary art displays that change regularly, keeping each visit fresh and exciting. Book with Viator

You can't visit Graz without taking the funicular up Schlossberg. The climb is a mini adventure, and at the top, you’re rewarded with breathtaking views. Spend a lazy afternoon exploring the clock tower and old fortress ruins. Book with GetYourGuide
Stroll through the Murinsel

>Where to EatYou have to try Der Steirer. It’s a modern twist on traditional Styrian cuisine in a cozy, friendly setting. Order the Styrian fried chicken — trust me, it's divine.
Don't leave without eating at Frankowitsch for lunch. Their open sandwiches are the best quick bite in town, and the ambiance is charmingly retro.
For a special dinner, El Pescador offers delightful seafood. Their paella is a must, and the lively atmosphere makes it a perfect end to a day of exploring.
>Honest Local TipsExplore Beyond the Old Town: Graz is more than its historic center. Wander out to the Lend district for artsy vibes and cool cafes.
Sunday Closure: Many shops close on Sundays. Plan your shopping and dining accordingly!
Public Transport App: Download the ÖBB app for easy navigation of trams and buses. It's a lifesaver.
Lack of English Menus: Not all restaurants offer English menus. Ask for recommendations or try Google Translate.
Cash is King: Smaller eateries often prefer cash, so carry some euros.
Overpricing in Tourist Areas: Beware of overpriced menus at tourist hotspots like Schlossberg. Venture further for better deals.
Mistake I Made: I once underestimated the hill to Schlossberg. Wear comfortable shoes or take the funicular!
>Getting AroundGraz is wonderfully walkable, but when your feet tire, hop on a tram or bus. A 24-hour public transport pass costs around €5.50. Bikes are everywhere, and you can rent one from Nextbike fairly cheaply. Be cautious of impromptu ticket inspectors on public transport. Avoid unsolicited taxi rides.
>Is Graz Worth It?Absolutely! Graz is a delightful blend of history, culture, and modern flair. It’s perfect for exploring at a slow pace, savoring the local cuisine, and enjoying artsy vibes. If you're a city slicker looking for a frenetic nightlife, it might feel a bit too relaxed. But if you love charming streets, stunning architecture, and artistic flair, Graz will steal your heart. Would I go back? In a heartbeat!
