Why I Love Hamburg

I'll never forget my first evening stroll along Hamburg’s harbor, the scent of fresh sea breeze mixing with the earthy aroma of street food carts. The sun was setting, casting a golden glow on the Elbphilharmonie’s shimmering facade. Hamburg is a city that wraps you in its rich history and modern vibrancy all at once. Its blend of maritime culture, cutting-edge architecture, and cozy neighborhoods just resonates with me. Whether it’s discovering hidden corners in the Speicherstadt or kicking back in a chic café in the Schanzenviertel, Hamburg feels like a city I could endlessly explore and always find something new to love.

Quick Facts

Getting There

Hamburg is easily accessible by air, with the Hamburg Airport (HAM) being just about 20 minutes from the city center. You can get direct flights from major cities like London, New York, and Dubai. Carriers like Ryanair and EasyJet often have great deals from European cities. If you’re coming from non-EU countries, check if you need a Schengen visa. Hamburg is also well connected by train if you fancy a scenic European railway journey.

My Favourite Things To Do

Wander the Speicherstadt

One of my favorite things to do here is wander the historic Speicherstadt. It’s the largest warehouse district in the world, crisscrossed by charming canals. Grab your camera, the red-bricked buildings and quaint bridges make for stunning photos! Book with Viator

Explore Miniatur Wunderland

You cannot leave Hamburg without experiencing Miniatur Wunderland. It’s not just for kids — the level of detail in the model railway exhibits is astonishing. Plus, seeing the world in miniature scale offers a unique perspective! Book with GetYourGuide

Relax at Planten un Blomen

After days of exploration, find solace in Planten un Blomen, a beautiful park in the heart of the city. I love visiting during the water-light concerts in the summer. Pack a picnic and enjoy! Book with Viator

Where to Eat

You have to try Fischbrötchen at Brücke 10 along the harbor. It’s fresh, hearty, and perfectly captures Hamburg’s maritime spirit. For an amazing brunch, head over to Café Paris — their Croque Madame is unforgettable in the art deco setting. And don’t leave without eating at Frau Möller; their schnitzel is delightful, and the vibe is always lively. Expect to spend around €15-€30.

Honest Local Tips

Public transport app: Download the HVV app. It’s so handy for navigating Hamburg’s excellent public transit.

Early birds at Miniatur Wunderland: Arrive early to beat the crowds. It’s much more enjoyable when you can move around freely.

Cash is king: Many smaller places prefer cash, so keep some euros handy.

Elbphilharmonie Plaza: Even if you don’t see a concert, visit the Elbphilharmonie’s Plaza. The views of the city are stunning.

Don’t rush St. Pauli: I made the mistake of rushing through St. Pauli during the day. It truly comes alive at night, so be sure to explore both vibes.

Discounts with a Hamburg Card: Grab a Hamburg Card for free public transport and discounts on attractions.

Getting Around

Hamburg’s public transport is efficient and convenient. Use the U-Bahn and S-Bahn networks to zip across the city. Bikes are also a great way to explore — use the StadtRAD system. Taxis are safe and reliable; just ensure they’re meter-based to avoid scams. Uber operates here if you prefer app-based rides.

Is Hamburg Worth It?

Absolutely, Hamburg is perfect for those who love a blend of history, culture, and vibrant city life. It may lack the warmth for sunseekers, given its typically northern European weather. But for anyone who enjoys exploring diverse neighborhoods, unique architecture, and maritime tales, Hamburg is a must. I’d go back in a heartbeat, as the city feels both thrillingly new and comfortingly familiar every time I visit.
