Why I Love Hua Hin

I still remember the salty breeze that first greeted me as I strolled along the pristine sands of Hua Hin beach. This charming Thai town stole my heart with its blend of vibrant night markets and serene coastal escapes. Imagine colorful tuk-tuks zipping past, street vendors selling everything from fresh mango sticky rice to sizzling seafood skewers, and friendly locals eager to share stories. There's a calmness here that contrasts beautifully with the buzz of Bangkok, making it a perfect getaway. Whether you're lounging by the sea or exploring lush hillsides, Hua Hin offers a taste of everything I love about Thailand.

Quick Facts

Getting There

Getting to Hua Hin is straightforward. If you're flying into Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi Airport offers direct shuttle buses to Hua Hin. The journey takes about 3 hours. Alternatively, you can catch a train from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong Station for a scenic 4-hour ride. Airlines like Thai Airways and Nok Air often have promotions if you’re flying within Asia. Visa-wise, many nationalities can enjoy a visa-free stay in Thailand for up to 30 days, but double-check based on your passport.

Where to Stay

Budget (under $80/night)

At the heart of Hua Hin, you’ll find the Cheeky Monkey hostel. It's perfect for solo travelers or anyone on a budget. The chilled rooftop pool and vibrant common areas make it easy to meet other travelers. Plus, it’s just a short walk from the night market. Check availability on Expedia

Mid-Range ($80-200/night)

I stayed at the Putahracsa Hua Hin, which balances modern style with laid-back beach vibes. The rooms are chic, the staff treats you like a long-lost friend, and the breakfast spread will make your mornings. Check availability on Expedia

Luxury ($200+/night)

If you're splurging, the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort is pure bliss. With its beachfront location, luxurious rooms, and exceptional service, it's perfect for honeymooners or anyone looking to unwind in style. Check availability on Expedia

My Favourite Things To Do

Visit the Hua Hin Night Market

One of my favourite things to do here is exploring the Hua Hin Night Market. The energy is electric with vendors selling everything from local crafts to aromatic street food. Don't miss trying the grilled prawns or grabbing a quirky souvenir. Book with Viator

Explore Phraya Nakhon Cave

Hiking to Phraya Nakhon Cave is like stepping into a mysterious world. Early morning is best for catching the sunlight streaming through, illuminating the shrine inside. It's utterly mesmerizing. Book with GetYourGuide

Enjoy Kite Surfing

Hua Hin's breezy coast is ideal for kite surfing. Whether you're a newbie or a pro, you'll love the thrill of catching the wind and riding the waves. Book with Viator

Where to Eat

You have to try Koti Restaurant. It's a local legend serving up authentic Thai dishes; their green curry is divine. For a romantic dinner, head to Let's Sea, overlooking the beach — their seafood platter is worth every baht. Don't leave without eating at Hua Hin Vegan Cafe if you love plant-based meals; their coconut ice cream is to die for. Prices range from $5 to $30 depending on the dish.

Honest Local Tips

Tipping Culture: Tipping isn't mandatory, but leaving some change or rounding up is appreciated.

Mosquito Repellent: Bring some or buy locally—they can be relentless, especially near the water.

Sun Protection: The sun is fierce, so load up on sunscreen and wear a hat, even on cloudy days.

Scooter Scams: If renting a scooter, photograph any existing damages and ensure you understand the rental terms.

Currency Exchange: Exchange rates are often better in town than at the airport. I made the mistake of exchanging too much at the airport.

Language Apps: While many locals speak English, downloading a translation app can enhance your experience and help in remote areas.

Getting Around

Hua Hin is easy to navigate with tuk-tuks and songthaews. They're inexpensive and provide a true local experience. For more independence, consider renting a motorbike. Just remember to drive cautiously and always wear a helmet. Beware of taxis without meters, and agree on a price before starting your journey.

Is Hua Hin Worth It?

Absolutely, Hua Hin is worth a visit. It's perfect for beach lovers, food enthusiasts, and those seeking a laid-back Thai experience without the overwhelming hustle of more tourist-saturated areas. If you're after high-energy nightlife or intense city buzz, you might find it too tranquil. But for me, a few days in Hua Hin is like hitting the reset button. I'll definitely be back.
