Why I Love Kyiv

Wandering the cobblestone streets of Kyiv, there's a scent of lilacs that lingers in the air, especially in the spring. I think that's when I fell for the city—standing on the St. Andrew's Descent, admiring the pastel baroque architecture under a sky so blue it could rival any ocean. Kyiv is a city of contrasts where ancient cathedrals whisper their stories amidst lively contemporary art scenes. It’s alive with a spirit of resilience and creativity, reflecting the warmth of its people. Sharing a glass of horilka with new friends in a cozy café is just one of those Kyiv moments I cherish.

Quick Facts

Kyiv

Getting There

Flying into Kyiv is straightforward. Boryspil International Airport (KBP) is the main gateway, often serviced by budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air, making flights from London or other European cities affordable. Flights from New York typically connect through another major European city, taking around 11 hours in total. If you've never been to Ukraine before, check visa requirements; many Western countries have a visa-free agreement, but it's always good to double-check.

Where to Stay

Budget (under $80/night)

One of my favorite budget stays is the Dream House Hostel. It’s smack dab in the heart of Podil, Kyiv’s hip district. You’ll love its friendly vibe, with a mix of private rooms and dorms, and it even has a bar where travelers and locals mix. Perfect if you're looking to meet people. Check availability on Expedia

Mid-Range ($80-200/night)

11 Mirrors Design Hotel is a brilliant choice if you want to step up from budget without going full-on luxury. Its sleek design and central location make it ideal for exploring by day and enjoying the vibrant nightlife. Plus, the views from the higher floors are incredible. Check availability on Expedia

Luxury ($200+/night)

The Fairmont Grand Hotel is the epitome of Kyiv elegance, right on the Dnipro River. From the plush rooms to the sumptuous breakfast spread, every detail is top-tier. It’s perfect if you want to indulge in style while soaking up historical charms. Check availability on Expedia

>My Favourite Things To Do

Explore the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra

One of my favorite things to do here is explore the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. The mystique of the ancient underground catacombs paired with the stunning golden-domed churches above is something you have to experience firsthand. Wander through history and soak in the spirituality. Book with Viator

Stroll Down Andriyivskyy Descent

This quaint, winding street is lined with art galleries, cute boutiques, and quirky shops. It’s like an open-air museum, and honestly, it's a photographer’s dream. I always end up buying something unique here. Book with GetYourGuide

Visit the Chernobyl Museum

While a bit somber, the Chernobyl Museum provides an important insight into Ukraine’s history. The thoughtful exhibits are moving and informative, providing a nuanced perspective on the disaster’s impact. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Kanapa on Andriyivskyy Descent—traditional Ukrainian cuisine with a gourmet twist. Their borscht is a must. Then, there's Puzata Hata for a hearty meal on a budget—it’s like a canteen, and the varenyky here are unbeatable. For a fun vibe, head to Veterano Pizza. It’s run by veterans and the pizza has this deliciously rustic flavor. Prices range from cheap bites under $10 to a fancy night out around $30.

>Honest Local Tips

Respect local customs: Ukrainians appreciate politeness and a firm handshake. Learn a few phrases in Ukrainian—they love it!

Try the Georgian food: You’ll find better khachapuri here than in many other places, thanks to a solid Georgian community.

Public transport is your friend: The metro is not just cost-effective but also a mini dive into Soviet architecture. It's only about 10 UAH (about $0.30) a ride!

Beware of your wallet: While generally safe, keep an eye out in crowded places as petty theft can happen.

ATMs and currency: Use ATMs for the best exchange rates but ensure it’s in a safe spot.

Park Peremohy surprise: I wish someone had told me this green oasis exists, perfect for a relaxing escape.

Avoid impromptu taxi rides with strangers: Always use apps like Uber or Bolt for transparency and safety.

>Getting Around

Kyiv's metro is efficient and cheap. Download the 'Kyiv Smart City' app for travel info and updates on the go. Taxis are convenient too; just watch for scams. Use official taxi apps, and remember, traffic can be wild, so allow extra time.

>Is Kyiv Worth It?

Kyiv is a city for those with a curious spirit. If you love history, architecture, and aren’t afraid to veer off the beaten path, you'll fall in love with it as I did. It might not be for someone seeking a tropical beach getaway, but for a vibrant mix of tradition and modernity, Kyiv is a gem. I’d go back in a heartbeat for another walk down those enchanted, lilac-scented streets.
