Why I Love Lyon

Wandering the cobblestone streets of Lyon feels like stepping into a timeless painting. The aroma of freshly baked baguettes mingles with a gentle breeze as you cross the Saône River. I fell in love with Lyon the moment I stood atop Fourvière Hill, watching the city unfold beneath me, a tapestry of red rooftops and lush greenery. It's the unpretentious charm and culinary passion that make Lyon special. From secret bouchons tucked in Vieux Lyon to vibrant markets, this city celebrates life in every plate and cobblestone — a perfect blend of history, culture, and gastronomy.

Quick Facts

Lyon

Getting There

Flying into Lyon is a breeze. Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport (LYS) is the main hub, and it's well connected with major European cities. From London, you're looking at a short 1.5-hour flight, often cheapest with easyJet or British Airways. If you're coming from New York, expect a connection in Paris, with a total travel time of around 10 hours. Don't forget, U.S. citizens don't need a visa for stays under 90 days in France.

Where to Stay

Budget (under $80/night)

For something affordable, I love the SLO Living Hostel. It's got this laid-back vibe, perfect for meeting fellow travelers. The common kitchen is a great spot to swap stories over a shared meal. Bonus: it's just a short walk from the main train station. Check availability on Expedia

Mid-Range ($80-200/night)

Hotel Silky by HappyCulture is my go-to mid-range choice. Nestled in the heart of Presqu'île, it embodies chic simplicity. With cozy furniture and complimentary snacks, it feels like a home away from home. Definitely worth it for those charming balconies overlooking the street. Check availability on Expedia

Luxury ($200+/night)

For a truly luxurious stay, indulge yourself at the Cour des Loges. It's a 5-star experience in a Renaissance-era building. The courtyard is stunning, and the spa facilities are perfect after a day of exploring. Plus, it's located right in Vieux Lyon — pure magic. Check availability on Expedia

My Favourite Things To Do

Stroll Through Vieux Lyon

One of my favourite things to do here is getting lost in Vieux Lyon. The winding streets, with their quirky shops and hidden traboules (secret passageways), are a history lover's dream. Every corner tells a story, whether it’s a gourmet store or a centuries-old church. Book with Viator

Taste at Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse

You can't leave Lyon without a trip to Les Halles. This indoor food market is a gastronomic wonderland. I always sample some charcuterie and try cheeses I can't pronounce. It's perfect for foodies ready to explore Lyon’s culinary richness. Book with GetYourGuide

Hike to Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière

The hike up Fourvière Hill to the basilica offers sweeping views and a rewarding celestial finish. The basilica's intricate mosaics never fail to impress, and the view over Lyon from the terrace is truly unmatched. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Café des Fédérations for the ultimate bouchon experience. The laid-back, communal vibe makes it perfect for classic Lyonnaise dishes. Order the andouillette — it’s a must.

Don’t leave without eating at L’Arbre à Thé. This cozy spot offers a delightful afternoon tea with homemade pastries. It's a sweet escape from bustling streets.

For a fancy dinner, Le Kitchen Café is where innovation meets tradition. Their tasting menu is reasonably priced around €45 and an adventure for your taste buds.

>Honest Local Tips

Bring Comfy Shoes: Lyon is wonderfully walkable, but your feet will thank you for good shoes as you explore its inclined streets and plentiful steps.

Learn a Bit of French: Locals appreciate the effort, and a simple "bonjour" goes a long way. Google Translate is handy, but it’s nice to have a phrase or two up your sleeve.

Take the Funicular: The funicular to Fourvière Hill is a fun ride and saves you a strenuous climb, leaving you more energy to explore the basilica.

Mind the Siesta Hours: Many shops close in the afternoon, especially in Vieux Lyon, so plan your shopping trips accordingly.

Mistake I Made: I underestimated the heat in summer — sunblock and a hat are must-packs.

Check Opening Days: Some of Lyon's restaurants close midweek, particularly on Mondays or Tuesdays, so always double-check hours before you plan the perfect meal.

>Getting Around

Lyon's public transport is superb. Grab the TCL app for metro and bus schedules. A single ticket costs about €1.90, or snag a day pass for €6. Bike rentals with Vélo’v are abundant and practical. Taxis can be pricey, so use Uber for longer distances. Watch out for the classic tourist scam of "friendly photographers" asking exorbitant return fees for your photo!

>Is Lyon Worth It?

Absolutely, Lyon is a feast for the senses and is perfect for those who love history, food, and charming cityscapes. It offers a slower pace than Paris, with just as much to see and do. If hustle and bustle stress you out or you aren’t a fan of French cuisine, you might find it less appealing. But for everyone else, Lyon is a perfect blend of old-world charm and modern comforts — I’d go back in a heartbeat.
