Why I Love Marrakech

Stepping into Marrakech is like opening a novel where each page is splashed with color, sound, and aroma. The first time I wandered through Jemaa el-Fnaa, the heart of the city, I was entranced by the symphony of beating drums, the smoky scent of sizzling meats, and the vibrant stalls bursting with spices. It’s a sensory feast! What truly captured my heart was that perfect balance between chaotic energy and serene beauty—you can lose yourself in the labyrinthine souks by day, then find tranquility in a rooftop café at sunset, watching the city bathed in golden light.

Quick Facts

Marrakech

Getting There

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is where you’ll land. From New York, you can fly direct with Royal Air Maroc, taking around 7 hours. From London, budget airlines like easyJet offer non-stop flights taking 3.5 hours. If you're coming from Dubai, Emirates flies directly in about 7.5 hours. Most travelers from the U.S., UK, and EU won't need a visa for stays up to 90 days, but double-check the latest requirements.

Where to Stay

Budget (under $80/night)

For a budget stay, I recommend Riad Darna. It’s nestled in the medina and perfect if you're craving authenticity over luxury. The mint tea they serve feels like being welcomed into a friend's home. Great for solo travelers or couples who love a social vibe. Check availability on Expedia

Mid-Range ($80-200/night)

Riad Karmela is my pick. Enter through its unassuming door and find yourself in a lush courtyard with traditional Moroccan flair—a real oasis. Ideal for romantic getaways; don't miss the rooftop breakfast. Check availability on Expedia

Luxury ($200+/night)

La Mamounia is where luxury meets history. This iconic hotel offers opulent décor, a luxurious spa, and exquisite gardens. Perfect for those ready to splurge for an unforgettable experience. Check availability on Expedia

>My Favourite Things To Do

Explore the Medina

One of my favourite things to do here is dive into the medina’s lively souks. It's a treasure trove where bargaining is an art form, and you can find everything from leather goods to intricate lamps. Book with Viator

Visit Jardin Majorelle

Don’t miss Jardin Majorelle, an oasis of cobalt blue and lush greenery. Designed by French painter Jacques Majorelle, it's a serene escape from the bustling city. Book with GetYourGuide

Take a Cooking Class

Sign up for a Moroccan cooking class! Learning to make tagine from scratch was a delightful dive into local culture. Plus, you get to savor your creations. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Nomad—stylish, with a rooftop view to die for. Order the lamb tagine, around $15. If you fancy a hidden gem, Café des Épices offers a cozy atmosphere with a must-try mint lemonade, meals under $10. Lastly, don’t leave without eating at Le Tobsil, offering an intimate setting with traditional Moroccan fare, roughly $50 per person.

>Honest Local Tips

Carry Small Change: Tipping is customary, so keep some coins handy for guides, porters, and even restroom attendants.

Haggle Gently: Bargaining is expected in souks, but keep it fun! Enter with a smile and don’t be overly aggressive.

Dress Respectfully: Especially in religious sites, women should cover shoulders and knees. I threw a scarf in my bag, which was a lifesaver.

Beware of Fake Guides: Unofficial guides will approach you in the medina. Stick to official guides or explore independently.

Mistake I Made: Underestimated distances! The medina is huge, and Google Maps isn’t always reliable. Embrace getting lost—it’s part of the adventure.

Hydration Alert: Stay hydrated! Marrakech is hot and dry, so always carry a bottle of water.

>Getting Around

Taxis are convenient, so download the Careem app for easy bookings. Agree on a fare before the ride if hailing a taxi on the street. Public buses are an option but can be crowded. As always, keep an eye on your belongings and avoid accepting unsolicited taxi rides.

>Is Marrakech Worth It?

Absolutely! Marrakech is perfect for those who love a mix of history, culture, and sensory overload. It's an exotic escape that leaves you wide-eyed and curious. Solo travelers, couples, and adventurers will find it especially enchanting. If you prefer calm, orderly travel, the chaos might overwhelm you. But for me, the vibrant energy is a siren call I can’t resist—I’ll definitely return.
