Why I Love Monaco

The first time I stepped into Monaco, the scent of the Mediterranean instantly hit me—a mix of salty sea air and blooming bougainvillea. It's like stepping into a cinematic postcard where glamour and beauty are the backdrop of everyday life. Walking by the Monte Carlo Casino at night, with its lights shimmering like stars, I felt like anything could happen. Monaco's magic lies in its ability to make anyone feel like royalty; from the pristine gardens of the Prince's Palace to the charming lanes of Fontvieille, there's an elegance that never feels intimidating, only inviting. There’s something about the sound of heels clicking on cobblestone and the sight of luxury cars humming down narrow streets that make you feel you’ve been whisked away to a world where dreams meet reality.

Quick Facts

Getting There

Getting to Monaco is surprisingly straightforward considering its reputation as a glamorous hotspot. The nearest airport is Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, which is just a 30-minute drive away. If you're coming from London or New York, airlines like British Airways and Delta offer direct flights to Nice. From Dubai, Emirates provides a comfortable and direct route. From Nice, you can take a scenic helicopter ride to Monaco, which, let me tell you, is an experience in itself! Alternatively, the train from Nice takes you directly to Monaco in about 20 minutes. No visas are required for EU, US, or Australian citizens for short stays.

My Favourite Things To Do

Exploring the Oceanographic Museum

One of my favourite things to do here is diving into the wonders of the Oceanographic Museum. The turtles and rare fish make it a fascinating stop for marine enthusiasts and families alike. The rooftop terrace offers stunning views—grab a coffee and soak it in! Book with Viator

Strolling in Jardin Exotique

Another must-do is wandering through the Jardin Exotique. The place is alive with vibrant plants and offers panoramic views of Monaco's coastline. It's a photographer's dream or simply a peaceful escape. Book with GetYourGuide

Experiencing the Grand Prix Circuit

Even if you're not a racing fan, walking the Grand Prix Circuit gives you an incredible perspective of the city. You can almost hear the roar of the engines and feel the adrenaline. It's history and excitement rolled into one. Book with Viator

Where to Eat

You have to try the Brittany oysters at Café de Paris Monte-Carlo. It’s an iconic spot with views of the casino square; expect to pay around €40 for a meal.

Don't leave Monaco without eating at U Cavagnetu. It’s a bit tucked away but serves excellent regional dishes like barbajuans—they're a must-try. Meals are roughly €25.

For something truly unique, indulge at Yoshi. It’s the only Japanese restaurant on the French Riviera with a Michelin star. Get the tasting menu for about €150, and thank me later!

Honest Local Tips

Avoid peak hours in Monte Carlo: Traffic gets notoriously dense, especially right around the casino. Early mornings or late evenings are best for a peaceful stroll.

Tourist prices at cafés: Sit down at the casino square for people-watching, but be prepared for steep coffee prices. Ordering at the bar is cheaper.

Hidden beaches: Head to Plage Mala via a short hike. It’s less crowded and absolutely beautiful.

Casino attire: Pack something elegant if you plan to enter the Casino. Jackets and dress shoes are required for men in the evenings.

Public transport bargain: Consider the Carte Azur daily pass. It’s affordable and covers all your bus rides in Monaco and nearby towns.

Scams to avoid: Steer clear of anyone offering “discounted” tours near the train station. They’re often subpar.

Getting Around

Monaco is tiny, so walking is the best way to see everything. For longer distances, buses are efficient and cheap—use the Monaco Bus app for schedules. Electric bikes are available for hire, which is a fun way to explore too. Taxis are pricey, and you should agree on a fare in advance or ask for the meter to be used. Be cautious near the train station where petty theft can occur, especially during busy hours.

Is Monaco Worth It?

For me, Monaco is the perfect blend of luxury and breathtaking natural beauty. It's ideal for those who appreciate fine dining, stunning views, and a sprinkle of glitz and glamour. While it’s not cheap, it's a place to experience at least once. It may not suit those looking for a budget beach holiday or solo backpacking adventures, but for a romantic getaway or a special occasion trip, it’s truly unforgettable. Would I go back? Absolutely. There's always more opulence to soak up.
