Why I Love Montego Bay

Imagine the feeling of warm sand between your toes and the soothing rhythm of reggae in the background. That was my first moment in Montego Bay, and I was instantly hooked. The blend of vibrant colors from the bustling Hip Strip to the turquoise hues of the Caribbean Sea is enchanting. There's an infectious energy here that's both relaxing and invigorating. Whether it's sipping a fruity cocktail on Doctor’s Cave Beach or exploring the lush mountains, Montego Bay feeds your soul with a rich cultural tapestry and breathtaking natural beauty. It's not just a destination; it's a state of mind.

Quick Facts

Getting There

Flying into Sangster International Airport (MBJ) is your best bet. It’s serviced by major airlines like American Airlines, Delta, and British Airways. From New York, it’s about a 4-hour flight, while from London, you’re looking at around 9 hours. If you're coming from Dubai, expect a longer journey with a layover. Check visa requirements before you go—many travelers from the US and UK can enter without a visa for short stays.

My Favourite Things To Do

Explore Dunn’s River Falls

One of my favorite things to do here is climb the natural terraces of Dunn’s River Falls. The exhilaration of the cool water and the stunning views make it unforgettable. Make sure you wear water shoes! Book with Viator

Visit Rose Hall Great House

The chilling stories of the White Witch enthralled me on my visit to this beautifully restored plantation house. Whether you believe the ghost stories or not, it’s a fascinating glimpse into Jamaica’s history. Book with GetYourGuide

Snorkeling at Doctor’s Cave Beach

This beach is iconic for crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life. Renting snorkel gear and spending the day here is a must. The tranquility underwater is pure bliss. Book with Viator

Where to Eat

You have to try Scotchies for authentic jerk chicken and pork. The spicy kick is worth the trip alone, and it’s great for a casual lunch. Roughly $10-15 per person.

Don't leave without eating at The HouseBoat Grill. Dining on the water with fresh seafood is an experience you can’t miss. Order the lobster. It’s a bit pricier, around $30-50 but worth every bite.

Pork Pit is a local favorite where you get a taste of Montego Bay’s heart and soul. Their ribs and festival (fried dough) are sublime, around $10-20 per person.

Honest Local Tips

Avoid peak cruise days: Montego Bay can get crowded when cruise ships come in. Google the schedule and plan around it for a more relaxed visit.

Negotiate taxi fares: Always agree on a price before you hop in a taxi. It’s expected to haggle a bit.

Beware of tourist traps: Particularly on the Hip Strip, some places inflate prices for tourists. Don’t be afraid to ask locals for their recommendations.

Currency tips: While US dollars are accepted, using Jamaican dollars often gets you a better deal.

Try local fruits: Street vendors offer fresh, seasonal fruits that are delicious and cheap. My favorite was the sweet, juicy mangoes.

Stay hydrated and use sunscreen: It’s easy to get lost in the fun, but the sun is strong. Keep a bottle of water and sunscreen handy.

Cultural festivals: If you can, time your visit with a reggae festival or local event. It’s an excellent way to immerse yourself in the culture.

Getting Around

Montego Bay's public transport consists mainly of minibuses and route taxis—cheap but crowded. Download the app Juta to hire reliable private drivers. Renting a car is feasible, but roads can be tricky. Expect to pay around $1-2 if using public transport and slightly higher for private taxis. Be wary of unsolicited taxi offers.

Is Montego Bay Worth It?

Montego Bay is a vibrant blend of beautiful beaches, rich culture, and tantalizing food, perfect for travelers who love both relaxation and adventure. Sunseekers and history buffs will find plenty to savor, while party-goers will enjoy the nightlife. If you’re looking for a quiet, off-the-beaten-path experience, it might not be your vibe. But for me, Montego Bay is a joyful escape I’d revisit anytime.
