Why I Love Riga
The first time I strolled through Riga’s Old Town, it was as if I’d stepped into a colorful fairytale. The buildings, with their intricate Art Nouveau facades, were like nothing I’d ever seen. I remember the sound of street musicians echoing through the cobblestone streets as I sipped on some warm mulled wine from a bustling market stall. Riga has this incredible mix of history and modernity, from its medieval architecture to its vibrant nightlife. It’s the kind of place where you breathe in the past and future at once, and I just can’t get enough of that feeling.

Getting There
Getting to Riga is surprisingly easy. Riga International Airport (RIX) offers direct flights from major cities like London, New York, and Dubai. From London, it’s about a 2.5-hour flight, and the budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air often have great deals. From New York, expect a longer journey, usually with a layover in a European hub. Visa-wise, if you’re from the EU, the US, or Canada, you’re good for a 90-day stay every 180 days.

>My Favourite Things To DoExplore Old Town
One of my favorite things to do here is get lost in the winding streets of Old Town. Each alleyway has its own charm, and the cafes and boutiques are delightful finds. It’s the perfect way to start your day. Book with Viator
Visit the Central Market
You absolutely have to check out the Riga Central Market. It’s in these massive old zeppelin hangars. I bought the most amazing smoked fish and local cheeses there. Book with GetYourGuide
Discover Art Nouveau Architecture
I was blown away by Riga’s Art Nouveau district. The details on the buildings are insanely intricate and unique. You can almost always find new little features if you look closely enough. Book with Viator
>Where to EatYou have to try LIDO, a kind of Latvian buffet-style restaurant. It’s hearty, affordable, and truly local. Don’t leave without eating at Domini Canes for their creamy garlic soup — the atmosphere is rustic and cozy. If you’re into something chic, check out Vincents for a modern twist on Baltic dishes. Roughly €10-€40 depending on where you go.
>Honest Local TipsStay Safe in Old Town
While generally safe, watch out for pickpockets, especially at night around bars.
Use Bolt for Taxis
Download the Bolt app for rides around the city. It’s the Uber of the Baltics and much cheaper than local cabs.
Don’t Confuse Drink Prices
Be cautious in bars and check prices first. I learned the hard way when a ‘special cocktail’ turned out to be a €25 shocker.
Carry Some Cash
Though cards are widely used, some smaller vendors in markets prefer cash.
Explore Beyond Old Town
There’s so much more to Riga than Old Town! Head to the Kalnciema Quarter or take a ferry to explore the lush Riga’s archipelago.
Riga’s public transport is efficient and easy to navigate. Grab a reloadable e-ticket for buses, trams, and trolleys, which can be a lifesaver. Walking is also a great way to soak in the city’s atmosphere. Avoid taxi scams by sticking to Bolt, or take a city canal boat for a unique perspective.
>Is Riga Worth It?Absolutely! Riga is perfect for travelers who love history, architecture, and a vibrant nightlife mixed with a dash of the unexpected. It might not be for you if you prefer tropical paradises, but for those craving a European city with character and charm, Riga is a hidden gem. I’m already planning my next trip back!
