Why I Love San Marino

There’s something truly magical about San Marino. Picture this: you're standing atop Monte Titano, and the mist rolls away to reveal a breathtaking panorama of quaint hilltop castles, enchanting stone towers, and lush green valleys. I felt like I had stepped into a fairytale! The history here is palpable, and every corner you turn holds a secret waiting to be uncovered. And let me tell you, the sunsets from the towers are unforgettable—a golden glow that blankets the landscape. I adore how San Marino exudes charm and tranquility, making it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle.

Quick Facts

San Marino

Getting There

Getting to San Marino is surprisingly straightforward. The closest airport is Federico Fellini International Airport in Rimini, Italy, about a 30-minute drive away. Most major European airlines, including Ryanair and EasyJet, offer affordable flights to Rimini. From London, it's roughly a two-hour flight, while from New York, you'll likely need to make a stopover, possibly in Rome or Milan. Once in Rimini, catch one of the frequent buses to San Marino. Remember, San Marino is not part of the EU's Schengen area, but for most visitors, no specific visa is needed beyond your entry requirements for Italy.

>My Favourite Things To Do

Explore the Three Towers

One of my favorite things to do here is explore the three towers of San Marino—Guaita, Cesta, and Montale. Each has its own story and offers panoramic views that took my breath away. Walking the trails that connect them was absolutely magical. Book with Viator

Wander the Old Town

You simply have to wander the charming streets of San Marino’s old town. I spent hours just getting lost among the cobbled lanes, exploring quaint shops and sampling local delicacies. It's a delightful maze of history and culture. Book with GetYourGuide

Visit Palazzo Pubblico

Don’t miss a visit to Palazzo Pubblico, the government building with its stunning Gothic architecture. The changing of the guard is a must-see! It’s like stepping back in time, and I loved imagining the political history that unfolded here. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Righi, where the views are matched only by the taste. Go for the tagliatelle al tartufo—it’s sublime! For a casual bite, La Terrazza is delightful; their pizzas are heavenly, and the atmosphere is relaxed. And please, don’t leave without eating at Nido del Falco—their roasted lamb is divine, and the cozy, rustic vibe is just perfect.

>Honest Local Tips

Get a Passport Stamp:
Even though you don’t need it, getting a passport stamp from the tourist office is a fun souvenir!

Cash Over Cards:
Many small shops prefer cash, so make sure you have euros on hand.

Avoid Mondays:
Museums and some attractions might be closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly!

Parking Perks:
If you’re driving, look for parking lots a bit outside the center. Cheaper and a lovely walk directly into the heart of the city.

Weather Watch:
I wish I knew how chilly it gets in the evenings, even in summer. Bring a jacket!

Avoid Peak Hours:
The cable car to Borgo Maggiore gets busy. Aim for early morning or late afternoon rides.

>Getting Around

San Marino is wonderfully walkable, especially in the historic center. For longer distances, the local bus service is efficient and inexpensive. Download the “Rimini-San Marino” app for schedules. Taxis are reliable but can add up quickly. And one small tip: always agree on the fare beforehand to avoid surprises.

>Is San Marino Worth It?

Absolutely! San Marino is perfect for those who love charming historical settings, stunning landscapes, and a taste of unique local culture. It’s the ideal getaway if you’re seeking tranquility and breathtaking views. However, if bustling nightlife is what you crave, you might find it a bit too serene. For me, I’d go back in a heartbeat—San Marino’s magic is just too captivating to resist.
