Why I Love Sarajevo

The first time I set foot in Sarajevo, it was the call to prayer echoing through the hills at dusk that hooked me. I was sitting in a small café, sipping strong Bosnian coffee, feeling the layers of history all around me. This city is a living tapestry where East meets West — its cobblestone streets whisper tales from the Ottoman Empire to the dark days of the siege. It's the warmth of the people, the soulful music of the sevdalinka, and the scent of freshly baked pita that make Sarajevo feel like an embrace. Every visit feels like coming home.

Quick Facts

Getting There

Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ) is your gateway. If you’re flying from London, expect a smooth direct flight taking about 2.5 hours on airlines like Wizz Air. From New York, you’ll likely have a layover in a European hub — total trip about 10 hours. There's no visa for EU and US citizens for stays up to 90 days. Check on eVisas for other nationalities before you plan.

Where to Stay

Budget (under $80/night)

Hostel Franz Ferdinand is my favorite for budget stays. It’s in the city's heart, and the vibe is super friendly, making it great for solo travelers. Expect clean dorms and lively common areas. Perfect for those who love meeting fellow backpackers. Check availability on Expedia

Mid-Range ($80-200/night)

I recommend Hotel President Sarajevo for its central location and spacious rooms. With a touch of modern luxury, it's great for couples or friends looking to be close to the action without breaking the bank. Don’t miss breakfast on the terrace with river views. Check availability on Expedia

Luxury ($200+/night)

For a splurge, Swissôtel Sarajevo is divine. From its elegant interiors to the sublime spa services, it’s everything you need for a pampered stay. Ideal for those who love modern comfort with a hint of opulence. Check availability on Expedia

My Favourite Things To Do

Walk Through Baščaršija

One of my favourite things is wandering through the historic Baščaršija market. The bazaar is buzzing with artisans, vibrant fabrics, and aromatic spices. It's like diving into a different era. Be sure to haggle over that perfect souvenir! Book with Viator

Visit the Tunnel of Hope

Don't miss the Tunnel of Hope museum. It offers poignant insights into the city’s resilience during the siege. Walking through the narrow passage is moving and reminds you of Sarajevo’s indomitable spirit. Book with GetYourGuide

Explore Vrelo Bosne

Head to Vrelo Bosne for a peaceful escape. This natural spring park is perfect for a leisurely afternoon, with lush landscapes and serene swan-filled ponds. Rent a bike or take a quiet horse-drawn carriage ride. Book with Viator

Where to Eat

You have to try Ćevabdžinica Željo for the best ćevapi — juicy and full of flavor, with that delicious somun bread. Casual, bustling atmosphere, under $10.
Don't leave without eating at Dveri — a cozy, rustic spot where the stuffed peppers are to die for. It’s like a warm embrace, roughly $15-25.
For a sweet finish, Torte i To is a must. Treat yourself to a slice of rich Bosnian cake with a chic, modern twist, around $5-8.

Honest Local Tips

Carry Small Change: Most places don’t break large bills. Keep coins for trams and small cafés.

Embrace the Pace: Life’s slower here. Relax and enjoy the leisurely service.

Stay Aware: The roads can be challenging for pedestrians — cross cautiously.

Respect Etiquette: Dress modestly when visiting mosques. It's appreciated.

Dealing with the Language: English is widely spoken, but a few Bosnian phrases will endear you to locals.

Mistake I Made: Underestimating the fjakas (slow afternoons). Plan for a siesta!

Cafes Are Hangouts: Don’t rush your coffee; it's a time to socialize and savor.

Getting Around

Download the Moovit app for real-time tram and bus updates. Trams are very affordable — under $1 per ride. Taxis are reliable but make sure the meter’s on. Be cautious of unofficial taxis outside tourist hotspots. Walking is the best for central areas; it’s safe and scenic!

Is Sarajevo Worth It?

Absolutely, Sarajevo is perfect for history buffs and those craving authentic cultural experiences. Its blend of tradition and modernity makes every corner a discovery. However, if you’re looking for beaches and constant nightlife, this may not satisfy that craving. Would I go back? In a heartbeat. The depth and warmth of Sarajevo have a way of staying with you long after you leave.
