Why I Love Singapore

Singapore is like stepping into a perfectly crafted piece of the world where the thrill of modernity sits right next to deep-rooted culture. Picture this: I'm walking through Chinatown, the air thick with the aroma of sizzling street food, then a few MRT stops later, I’m in the lush, futuristic Gardens by the Bay. It's the contrast I adore — the city feels like a place where you can glimpse tomorrow while savoring yesterday. There’s something electric about the place, where everything works seamlessly, and yet, each neighborhood has its own unique heartbeat. It's this blend of the vibrant and the serene that keeps pulling me back.

Quick Facts

Singapore

Getting There

Flying to Singapore is straightforward with Changi Airport being one of the best connected in the world. From London, direct flights take around 13 hours, while from New York, you’re looking at about 18 hours with a layover. Airlines like Singapore Airlines, Emirates, and Lufthansa often have good deals. If you’re from certain countries, including the U.S., U.K., and Australia, you won't need a visa for short visits. Always a good idea to double-check though!

>My Favourite Things To Do

Marina Bay Sands SkyPark

One of my favorite things to do here is head up to the SkyPark at Marina Bay Sands. The views are just incredible—you can see the whole city lit up at night. Perfect for a sundowner with a view that leaves you speechless. Book with Viator

Gardens by the Bay

Don't miss the futuristic Gardens by the Bay. Walking through the Supertree Grove feels like you're strolling through a sci-fi movie set. The light show in the evening is magical—trust me, bring your camera! Book with GetYourGuide

Sentosa Island

Sentosa is this magical escape on an island with beaches, Universal Studios, and adventure galore. Zip-lining through the treetops or chilling on the man-made beaches—it’s got a slice of paradise for everyone. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Lau Pa Sat, a bustling food market where the satay is unbeatable. Don’t leave without eating at Old Airport Road Food Centre for some legit Singaporean hawker classics—try the Hokkien Mee. For a nicer dinner, PS.Cafe in Dempsey Hill is perfect, with its lush garden setting and indulgent truffle fries.

>Honest Local Tips

Use EZ-Link Cards: Grab an EZ-Link card for convenient travel on public transport. It saves you from fumbling with cash or tickets.

Download Grab: Ride-sharing apps like Grab are super handy, and often cheaper than taxis.

Respect Local Laws: Singapore is famously strict with its laws. Chewing gum is a no-go and littering can hit you with hefty fines.

Stay Hydrated: The humidity here is no joke. Always have a water bottle with you.

Avoid Tourist Traps: Clarke Quay is fun but overpriced. Opt for local bars in neighborhoods like Tanjong Pagar for more authentic vibes.

Pack Light: My mistake was packing too much. You’ll live in shorts and light dresses, trust me!

Check Festival Dates: Visiting during the Chinese New Year or Formula 1 races can be fascinating but also more crowded and expensive.

>Getting Around

Singapore's MRT system is fantastic—clean, efficient, and covers pretty much everywhere you need to go. Grab and Gojek are lifesavers for short trips or late nights. A single trip on the MRT is around SGD 1.50-2.50. Always be cautious of touts offering 'special' tours at inflated prices.

>Is Singapore Worth It?

Absolutely, Singapore’s a dynamo of new experiences, perfect for those who relish city life with a touch of nature. It's ideal if you love exploring cultural pockets, indulging in culinary adventures, and marveling at architectural wonders. Though it might be pricier than its Southeast Asian neighbors, the sheer diversity of experiences justifies every extra dollar. It's a place I'll go back to for sure, especially with friends who appreciate a clean city that’s alive with stories waiting to be uncovered.
