Why I Love Sydney

So, imagine standing at the edge of Sydney Harbour, the salty breeze tickling your face, and the iconic sails of the Opera House catching the late afternoon sun — it’s pure magic. Sydney immediately stole my heart with its perfect blend of bustling city life and breathtaking nature. The buzz of Circular Quay, with its ferries darting to and fro, contrasts beautifully with the tranquility of its tucked-away beaches. Each time I dive into the ocean at Bondi, or grab a flat white at a funky café in Surry Hills, I feel like I've tapped into Sydney’s soul. It's an irresistible mix of sophistication and laid-back charm that keeps calling me back.

Quick Facts

Sydney

Getting There

Most international flights land at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD). If you're coming from London, it's about a 22-hour journey with a stopover. From New York, expect around 20 hours. For the best deals, I usually check Qantas or Emirates. Make sure to check visa requirements as most nationalities need an eVisitor visa, which you can easily apply for online.

>My Favourite Things To Do

Climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge

One of my favourite things to do here is climbing the Harbour Bridge. Imagine seeing Sydney spread out beneath you — it’s exhilarating and incredibly rewarding. The guided climb is fun, informative, and they take great photos. Book with Viator

Exploring the Royal Botanic Garden

You have to wander through the Royal Botanic Garden. It’s not just about the plants; it's all about those panoramic views of the harbour and the peaceful atmosphere. I could spend hours exploring its paths. Book with GetYourGuide

Discovering the Blue Mountains

Take a day trip to the Blue Mountains. Just a couple of hours from Sydney, the scenery is jaw-droppingly beautiful. Don’t miss the Three Sisters rock formation or a stroll through the eucalyptus forest trails. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try the epic brunch at The Grounds of Alexandria. It’s a bit of a local institution with its beautiful garden setting and creative dishes. Don’t miss the signature smashed avocado — around $25 AUD.

For dinner, don’t leave without eating at Bennelong, inside the Opera House. The atmosphere is luxe, and the food is locally inspired. Go for the roasted lamb — it’s sensational, with meals around $80 AUD.

For something more casual, head to Harry’s Cafe de Wheels. It’s legendary for its meat pies. Grab a Tiger Pie (with mash, peas, and gravy) for about $10 AUD.

>Honest Local Tips

Get an Opal Card: This is essential for public transport throughout the city. It’s super convenient and works on buses, trains, and ferries.

Avoid the Circular Quay trap: It’s easy to get lured by the cafés right on the water, but venture a bit further for better prices and food.

Coffee culture is a real thing: Coffee is serious business here. Try a flat white (it's like a small latte) at a local café.

Mind the sun: The Australian sun is fierce. Don’t skimp on sunscreen, even if you think you’re indestructible (trust me, I learned the hard way).

Dress code confusion: Aussies are casual, but some restaurants expect smart casual at a minimum. Call ahead if you’re unsure.

Preload your Opal Card: During my first trip, I underestimated travel costs. Preloading saves stress when navigating trains and buses.

Be cautious on the surf: Bondi's waves can be stronger than they look. Always swim between the flags.

>Getting Around

Grab an Opal Card as soon as you arrive. Trains, buses, and ferries are all within your reach with it, and the costs are relatively low — think $3-$6 AUD for a ferry ride. Download the TripView app for real-time transport info. Cabs and ride-sharing apps like Uber are plentiful but can get pricey. Avoid using unlicensed cabs though, as scams can happen.

>Is Sydney Worth It?

Without a doubt, Sydney’s an absolute treat for city and nature lovers alike. It’s perfect for those who love outdoor activities, vibrant nightlife, and stunning landscapes. Families will love the friendly atmosphere, and foodies will find endless delights. That said, if you're looking for a dirt-cheap getaway, the cost might be a bit daunting. But honestly, the experiences make it all worthwhile. Would I go back? In a heartbeat. It’s a city that sticks with you long after you leave.
