Why I Love Wellington

When I first set foot in Wellington, the crisp sea breeze hit my face with such a refreshing zest that I immediately felt alive. It’s more than just the stunning harbor or the quirky, bohemian vibe that makes this city special. It’s the energy of the people, the hum of creativity around every corner, and those dramatic hills framing the skyline. I remember strolling through Cuba Street with its colorful facades and feeling like I'd found a secret world of coffee lovers and artisans. Oh, and the food! Each bite is a delightful surprise. Wellington has a way of drawing you in and embracing you like an old friend.

If you’re into craft beer, head to Garage Project in Aro Valley; their inventive brews and laid-back vibe can’t be beaten. Prices range from affordable to a bit of a splurge, but it’s all worth it.

Honest Local Tips

Bring layers. Wellington’s weather is famously unpredictable. You might experience all four seasons in a day.

Skip renting a car. The city is compact and walkable. Plus, parking is a headache.

Embrace the wind. Known as the “Windy City” for a reason! Don’t fight it – just let it be part of the experience.

Take coffee culture seriously. Wellingtonians are passionate about their coffee. Ask locals for their favorite spot; they won’t steer you wrong.

Cultural etiquette. Be respectful of Maori culture. Engage sincerely and embrace learning moments.

Mistake I made: I overlooked Zealandia. It’s more than just a sanctuary – a testament to concerted conservation efforts. A must-visit for nature lovers.

Getting Around

Download the Metlink app for bus routes and schedules. The public transport here is reliable and affordable. For short trips, walking is your friend. Biking is popular too, but watch those hills! Ubers are available, though more expensive. Keep an eye on your belongings on crowded buses or streets – it’s generally safe but be mindful.

Is Wellington Worth It?

Absolutely! Wellington is perfect for those who relish the artsy, indie vibe, cultural richness, and foodie delights. If you're not big on bustling cities or unpredictable weather, you might find it challenging. But for me, Wellington’s charm lies in its vibrant, welcoming atmosphere and its tinge of unpredictability. I can't wait to return for more.
