Why I Love Zakopane

You know that magical feeling when the air is crisp and the mountains seem to embrace you? That's exactly how I feel in Zakopane. As soon as I arrive, I can’t help but be charmed by the blend of Tatra folklore and stunning alpine scenery. Whether it’s the snow-capped peaks in winter or the lush, green trails in summer, Zakopane is my go-to escape when I need a breath of fresh air and a touch of adventure. I vividly remember sipping a warm mulled wine while watching the sunset over Giewont — it’s those little moments that make me fall in love with this place every single time.

Quick Facts

Getting There

Zakopane is tucked away in the Tatra Mountains, but getting there can be part of the adventure! If you're flying in, the closest airport is Kraków-Balice Airport (KRK), about a two-hour drive away. From major cities like London or New York, you'll likely find the most cost-effective flights with airlines like Ryanair or LOT Polish Airlines. Once you land in Kraków, rent a car for a scenic drive to Zakopane or hop on a bus from the Kraków Bus Station. Remember, for most tourists, Poland is in the Schengen Area, so no extra visa is needed if you have a Schengen visa.

My Favourite Things To Do

Hiking to Morskie Oko

One of my absolute favorite activities in Zakopane is the hike to Morskie Oko. It's a refreshing way to soak in the panoramic views and the pristine beauty of the emerald lake. Pack a picnic and enjoy a meal with the best backdrop nature can offer. Book with Viator

Gubałówka Funicular

Riding the funicular up Gubałówka Hill is a must. I love the sweeping views of the Tatras from the top, and the lively market there always has unique souvenirs. It’s a quick and fun way to get literally and figuratively elevated. Book with GetYourGuide

Skiing in Kasprowy Wierch

In winter, skiing down the slopes of Kasprowy Wierch is exhilarating. Even if you're not a skier, the cable car ride itself offers breathtaking views. Just make sure to book tickets in advance during peak season. Book with Viator

Where to Eat

You have to try Bąkowo Zohylina Wyźnio, where the wooden interiors and traditional Polish dishes create an authentic experience. Their pierogi are unbeatable. Another favorite is Restauracja Owczarnia for its cozy atmosphere and fantastic mountain stew. Don't leave without eating at Karczma Zapiecek — the grilled oscypek cheese with cranberry is to die for, and it won't break the bank.

Honest Local Tips

Weather Watch
Zakopane's weather can be unpredictable. Always carry a light jacket, even in summer.

Cash Over Card
Some local places prefer cash, so having some złoty is handy. ATMs are widely available.

Avoid Krupówki Crowds
Krupówki Street is bustling. Explore early morning or late evening to dodge the crowds and enjoy the quieter side of Zakopane.

Parking Hurdles
If you’re driving, keep an eye out for parking zones and ticket machines. Parking can be a bit of a hassle, especially in peak seasons.

Bus Tickets
If you're using local buses, buy tickets beforehand at kiosks or shops, as you sometimes can’t purchase them from the driver.

Mistake I Made
I once underestimated the hike to Morskie Oko. It’s longer than it seems! Wear comfortable shoes and bring water.

Getting Around

Zakopane is delightfully walkable, but local buses are convenient for reaching trailheads and surrounding areas. Download apps like Jakdojade for bus schedules. Taxis are available but can be pricey. Rental bikes are fun in the warmer months. Be cautious of overcharging “tourist taxis” — always agree on a price before hopping in.

Is Zakopane Worth It?

Absolutely! Zakopane is perfect for nature lovers and anyone eager for outdoor activities combined with a dash of cultural charm. It's not the spot if you’re looking for a bustling city vibe or nightlife, but if tranquil mountain settings, hearty food, and fresh air appeal to you, then you’ll love it here. I'd return in a heartbeat for another taste of those amazing views and cozy mountain cabins.
