Ashgabat

Why I Love Ashgabat

Imagine walking through a city where every building seems to smile back at you under the gleaming sun. That's Ashgabat, stashed away in Turkmenistan, a place of white marble and whimsical architecture. I first stumbled upon it during a Silk Road road trip, and I couldn't shake off its peculiar charm. The serene blend of widespread boulevards and eccentric structures left me entranced. It's like stepping into an alternate universe where the past and future meld into one. And the people—oh, they’re incredibly warm-hearted, eager to share their stories with curious travelers like you and me.

Getting There

Getting to Ashgabat is an adventure in itself. The Ashgabat International Airport is your main gateway. Flights from London, New York, and Dubai exist, often with stopovers, usually in Istanbul. Turkish Airlines and FlyDubai are reliable options. Remember to check for a visa—most travelers need one, and you should apply in advance; it’s quite the paperwork!

For a slice of opulence, you have to try the Oguzkent Hotel. Stay here if you're craving luxury with spectacular views of the city. The spa is divine. Check availability on Expedia

>Where to Eat

You have to try the 'Altyn Asyr' Restaurant for a traditional dining experience; their pilaf is unforgettable. For a bit more fusion, Pizzeria 'Darvaza' serves a mean Turkmen-Italian menu. And don’t leave without eating at 'Yyldyz'. The ambiance is upscale, and their lamb dishes will make your tastebuds sing.

>Honest Local Tips >Getting Around

Ashgabat's transport scene is simple but effective. Taxis are abundant and using Yandex Taxi ensures fair pricing. If you’re adventurous, hop on a marshrutka for a local experience. They're cheap but can get crowded. Walking is a joyous way to explore the marble streets, just stay hydrated!

>Is Ashgabat Worth It?

Absolutely! Ashgabat is perfect for those intrigued by lesser-trodden paths, unique architecture, and vibrant culture. It’s not your typical tourist destination—it’s quirky and full of character. But if you're after typical city buzz or wild nightlife, you might find it too sedate. Would I go back? In a heartbeat, to uncover more of its secrets.
