Why I Love Auckland

Imagine standing atop Mount Eden with the cool breeze rustling through your hair, overlooking the endless sea of greenery and vibrant cityscape below. That's where I fell in love with Auckland. There's something about the blend of Maori culture, lush landscapes, and bustling city life that just works. Whether it's the soothing shores of Waiheke Island’s vineyards or the charming markets in the heart of the city, Auckland's diversity is what steals my heart every time. When you're here, you feel like you’re part of something bigger — a convergence of cultures and nature that pulses with life.

Quick Facts

Getting There

Flying into Auckland is straightforward. Auckland Airport (AKL) is the main gateway and well-connected. From London, it’s about a 24-hour journey, usually with stopovers in places like Singapore or Hong Kong. From New York, expect around 20 hours with a stopover in Los Angeles. Emirates, Air New Zealand, and Qantas often have competitive prices. Most visitors from the US, UK, and Australia don’t need a visa for stays up to three months.

My Favourite Things To Do

Explore Waiheke Island

One of my favourite things to do here is hop on a ferry to Waiheke Island. Once there, it’s all about rolling vineyards and stunning beaches. The wine tasting tours are a must, and exploring by bike is sheer joy. Book with Viator

Discover the Auckland Domain

Don't miss wandering through Auckland Domain, the city’s largest park. You’ll find the Auckland War Memorial Museum nestled here, surrounded by stunning gardens. It’s such a peaceful escape right in the city. Book with GetYourGuide

Visit the Sky Tower

For unbeatable views, head up the Sky Tower. The views of the city and the harbor from 328 meters above ground are jaw-dropping. If you're daring, try the SkyJump. Book with Viator

Where to Eat

You have to try the Federal Delicatessen. It’s like a New York-style deli with a Kiwi twist. Their salmon bagel is to die for — around $15 USD.

Don't leave without eating at Depot Eatery & Oyster Bar. The atmosphere is buzzing, and their oysters are a revelation. Mains range from $20-$40 USD.

For a relaxed vibe, pop into Giapo for some innovative ice cream. The Hokey Pokey flavor is a must — about $8 USD.

Honest Local Tips

Don’t Underestimate the Weather: Auckland can surprise you with four seasons in one day. Always layer up!

Weekends on Waiheke: Ferries can be packed, so book your ticket in advance if you’re heading to Waiheke on the weekend.

Coffee Culture is Key: Seriously, Aucklanders take their coffee seriously. Try the flat white at least once.

Beware of Parking Fines: I learned the hard way to avoid hefty parking fines. Double-check the signs before leaving your car.

Use AT HOP Cards: They save you time and money on public transport. Buy one as soon as you land.

Traffic Can Be Brutal: Plan your travels during off-peak hours, especially if driving to or from Auckland Airport.

Getting Around

In Auckland, you'll want the AT HOP card for easy travel on buses, trains, and ferries. Uber is reliable, but a bit pricier. Rental bikes are perfect for exploring areas like Devonport. Always keep an eye on peak travel times to avoid congestion, especially in the city center. Keep your belongings close on public transport, although it's generally safe.

Is Auckland Worth It?

Auckland is totally worth it if you’re into diverse cultures, vibrant city life, and stunning natural attractions all rolled into one place. It's perfect for those who love a mix of urban adventure and outdoor exploration. However, if you're looking for a purely budget-friendly destination, it can stretch the wallet. I'd definitely go back — there's always something new to discover.
