Galapagos

Why I Love Galapagos

Landing in the Galapagos, the salty air hits you first. It's a world like no other, where ancient tortoises roam freely, and sea lions laze in the sun. I remember snorkeling off the crystal-clear beaches of Santa Cruz, feeling a wave of awe as a playful sea lion zipped by. It's a wild, untouched paradise that invites you to disconnect from the digital world and connect with nature's wonders. The sense of adventure, the raw beauty, and the serenity make the Galapagos special to me. It’s like stepping into a nature documentary, where every moment feels extraordinary.

Quick Facts

Galapagos

Getting There

To reach the Galapagos, you'll typically fly into either Baltra or San Cristóbal airports. Most flights stop over in Quito or Guayaquil. Airlines like LATAM and Avianca often have competitive prices. From New York, expect around a ten-hour journey, layover included. From London, the trip can take 15 hours or more. Remember, you’ll need a Transit Control Card, which you can get at the airport before you fly to the islands. Also, there's a Galapagos National Park fee payable on arrival, which funds conservation efforts.

>My Favourite Things To Do

Snorkeling at Kicker Rock

One of my favorite activities is snorkeling at Kicker Rock. Imagining myself swimming alongside hammerhead sharks and vibrant fish never gets old. It’s a surreal experience that makes you feel like part of an underwater world. Book with Viator

Visit the Charles Darwin Research Station

The Charles Darwin Research Station is a must to understand the conservation efforts on these islands. Seeing Lonesome George’s preserved body was moving. They do incredible work here with tortoise breeding programs. Book with GetYourGuide

Hiking Sierra Negra Volcano

Hiking up Sierra Negra Volcano on Isabela Island offers breathtaking views of the vast caldera. It feels like standing on another planet. Make sure to pack water and a hat, the sun can be intense! Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try "Galapagos Deli" in Puerto Ayora for the best homemade gelato and sandwiches. Perfect after a day exploring! Don’t leave without eating at "Los Kioskos." This street becomes a bustling open-air dining area at night. Try the fresh seafood — it’s affordable and delicious. For a fine dining experience, "Angermeyer Waterfront Inn" offers beautiful views and a fantastic grilled fish dish. Expect to pay around $30-50.

>Honest Local Tips

Bring Cash: Many places don’t accept cards, so stock up on cash. ATMs can be scarce on some islands.

Book Tours in Advance: Popular tours fill up quickly. Booking a day or two ahead isn’t enough for some must-see spots.

Sun Protection is Key: The equatorial sun is strong. Bring eco-friendly sunscreen to protect your skin and the environment.

Respect Wildlife: Keep a respectful distance from animals. They are wild and need their space.

Waterproof Bags are Lifesavers: Unexpected rain and splashes from boat rides can wet your gear. A waterproof bag keeps everything dry.

Avoid Tap Water: Stick to bottled water to avoid getting sick. It’s a habit I wish I’d remembered from day one.

Be Ready for Motion Sickness: Ferries can be bumpy. If you’re prone to motion sickness, pack some medication.

>Getting Around

To explore different islands, ferries and small planes are your go-to options. Hop between islands using ferries, which cost around $30. For within-island travel, taxis are reliable, though renting a bike is a fun and affordable way to get around. Download maps offline as service can be spotty. Watch out for taxi scams — always agree on a price first!

>Is Galapagos Worth It?

Absolutely. If you love wildlife and the idea of stepping into a nature adventurer's dream, Galapagos is for you. It’s not for those who need city comforts or all-inclusive resort vibes. But if you're ready for some rugged exploration and natural beauty, you’ll leave with stories to tell and a heart full of wonder. I can’t wait to go back and see what’s changed on this ever-enchanting archipelago.
