Why I Love Koh Samui

I can still feel the soft sand beneath my toes as I remember my first steps on Koh Samui. There’s something magical about the island’s blend of vibrant nightlife and tranquil hideaways. One morning, I was sipping fresh coconut juice on Chaweng Beach, the waves gently lapping at the shore—the perfect soundtrack to paradise. Koh Samui isn’t just a destination; it feels like a heartfelt, sun-drenched embrace. Whether it's the aroma of street food sizzling in the night markets or a surprise encounter with the island’s tranquil temples, Koh Samui leaves an indelible mark on your heart.

My Favourite Things To Do

Explore Ang Thong National Marine Park

One of my favorite things to do here is to kayak around the emerald blue waters of Ang Thong Marine Park. The limestone cliffs are stunning, and snorkeling reveals vibrant marine life. It’s a refreshing way to connect with nature and enjoy the island’s natural beauty. Book with Viator

Visit Big Buddha

You can't come to Koh Samui and not visit the 12-meter tall Big Buddha. It’s majestic and serene, amidst the hustle and bustle. I loved the feeling of peace and introspection it conjured—definitely worth climbing the stairs for the view. Book with GetYourGuide

Fisherman's Village Walking Street

Don't miss the lively Fisherman’s Village Walking Street on Friday nights. Wandering through stalls offering delicious street food was an absolute delight, and the handcrafted souvenirs make great keepsakes. It's the perfect end to a beach day. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Jungle Club Restaurant for an unforgettable meal with breathtaking views. Order the pad thai—it’s to die for. Expect prices around $10-$20.

Don't leave without eating at Cafe 69, a quirky spot with inventive Thai fusion dishes. Their green curry is a must-have, and it’s reasonably priced at around $8.

For a true local experience, check out Gusto Italiano. The pizza was surprisingly authentic and delicious, a steal for about $12.

>Honest Local Tips

Rent a Scooter Carefully: Exploring on a scooter is liberating, but ensure your rental shop is reliable and take clear photos before setting off.

Hidden Beaches: Crystal Bay isn't as crowded as Chaweng and it’s stunning—a genuine gem if you crave tranquility.

Street Food: Koh Samui night markets offer great, authentic food at unbeatable prices. Dive in without hesitation.

Bargain Wisely: Haggling is part of the culture at local markets, but keep it friendly and fun.

Visa Extensions: I wish I'd known how easy it is to extend a visa at the immigration office for a small fee—so handy if you fall in love with the island as I did!

>Getting Around

Download the taxi app Grab for reliable rides, but for a truly local feel, hop on a Songthaew—the shared taxis are inexpensive and everywhere. Renting a scooter costs around $5-$10 a day, but ensure you have an international driving permit. Always wear a helmet and drive safely to avoid any mishaps.

>Is Koh Samui Worth It?

Absolutely! Koh Samui is the ideal destination for those seeking a mix of adventure and relaxation with a warm island vibe. It's perfect for beach lovers, foodies, and anyone needing some rejuvenating sunshine. If you're after deep cultural immersion or remote wilderness, it might fall short, but for me, its balance of rest and play is a win. I’d return in a heartbeat!
