Why I Love Manchester

It was a rainy afternoon when I first strolled through the vibrant streets of Manchester, and despite the drizzle, the city’s spirit was electric. Music spilled from every corner, and I swear you could feel the echoes of the Industrial Revolution in the cobblestones. I love Manchester for its unapologetic blend of gritty history and modern creativity. There’s nothing quite like sipping a pint in a historic pub, surrounded by the buzz of lively Mancunians. Whether it’s the indie vibes of the Northern Quarter or catching a gig at an iconic venue, Manchester hits you with a sense of belonging.

Quick Facts

Manchester

Getting There

Manchester is remarkably accessible. If you’re flying, Manchester Airport serves as a major hub with direct flights from New York (approx. 7 hours on British Airways), Dubai (Emirates, about 7 hours), and other international cities. From London, it’s a quick 2-hour train ride with Virgin Trains. No visa is needed for US, Canadian, or Australian tourists, but always check the latest rules.

>My Favourite Things To Do

Manchester Art Gallery

One of my favorite things to do here is wander through the Manchester Art Gallery. It’s an impressive collection that mixes contemporary pieces with classic European art — and it’s free! Don’t miss the Pre-Raphaelite paintings. It’s like a soothing escape from the city’s hustle. Book with Viator

A Football Game at Old Trafford

You simply can’t go to Manchester without experiencing the magic of a football game at Old Trafford. The roar of the crowd and the passion of Manchester United fans is infectious. Grab a pie and a pint, and lose yourself in the excitement! Book with GetYourGuide

Canal Street

Canal Street is a must-see for its vibrant LGBTQ+ scene and nightlife. I love the infectious energy of the area, where everyone is welcomed with open arms. Whether it's for a wild night out or a calm drink, the atmosphere is unbeatable. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Rudy’s Neapolitan Pizza in Ancoats — their Margherita is perfection, with just the right chew in the crust (£7-£12). For upscale dining, The Refuge offers globally-inspired small plates in a stunning historic setting (mains from £15-£30). Don’t leave without eating at Bundobust for Indian street food and craft beer; their creative buns and okra fries are unforgettable (£3-£7).

>Honest Local Tips

Explore by foot: The city center is very walkable. Put those comfy shoes on and wander aimlessly — you’ll find hidden gems everywhere.

Northern Quarter street art: Keep your eyes peeled for incredible murals and street art, which are forever changing.

Booking ahead for football: If you're aiming to catch a big football match, book your tickets well in advance — they sell out fast!

Umbrella essential: Don’t be like me on my first trip. I underestimated Manchester’s weather — always have an umbrella, even if it looks sunny.

Skip the taxi when you can: Manchester’s public transport is efficient and way cheaper than taxis. The Metrolink will get you most places.

>Getting Around

Download the Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) app for schedules and tickets, handy for the Metrolink trams and buses. Metrolink tickets are about £4.50 for a daily pass. Walking is superbly pleasant in the city center. Watch out for unofficial taxi scams — only use marked cabs or ride-share apps.

>Is Manchester Worth It?

Absolutely! Manchester is buzzing with creativity and history. Whether you’re a music lover, sports fan, or just someone who enjoys a good cultural cocktail, this city won’t disappoint you. Families might find better options elsewhere if seeking leisurely countryside sights, but for an authentic urban escape, I’d return in a heartbeat.
