Plitvice Travel Guide

Imagine standing at the edge of a turquoise lake surrounded by cascading waterfalls and lush, green forests. That’s exactly what hit me when I first set foot in Plitvice Lakes National Park. It felt like I had wandered into a fairytale. The sounds of water gently falling and the earthy scent of moss and trees create an otherworldly harmony. There’s something intensely peaceful and rejuvenating about exploring paths that snake around this mesmerizing natural wonder. I love Plitvice because it's a place where time slows down and nature overwhelms you with its beauty. Whether I’m hiking the trails or just sitting by the water, it’s impossible not to fall in love with the raw, untouched charm of Plitvice.

My Favourite Things To Do
Explore the Lower Lakes
One of my favorite things to do here is explore the enchanting Lower Lakes. The wooden walkways and boardwalks bring you up close to the cascading waterfalls and vibrant blue waters. It’s a photographer's dream! Book with Viator
Hike the Upper Lakes
Trekking through the Upper Lakes offers breathtaking views and serene moments. The untouched beauty along the trails and the sound of far-off waterfalls make for an unforgettable hike. Book with GetYourGuide
Visit Veliki Slap
I always recommend visiting Veliki Slap, the largest waterfall in the park. Standing at its base, feeling the spray of water, it’s a moving experience that sticks with you long after you leave. Book with Viator
Where to Eat
You have to try Lička Kuća, a traditional Croatian restaurant near Entrance 1. The lamb roasted under the bell is a must-order! For a cozy vibe and wood-fired pizzas, Bistro Vucnica is where it’s at. Prices range from $10-20. Don’t leave without eating at Restaurant Degenija — their homemade trout is heavenly, and the atmosphere is just right for a relaxed dinner.
Honest Local Tips
Visit early or late. The park can get crowded. If you’re there right when it opens or later in the afternoon, you’ll have a better experience.
Buy tickets online. This saves time and guarantees entry, especially in peak season.
Wear good shoes. Trust me, the trails can be slippery, and you’ll be walking a lot.
Pack a lunch. Food inside the park can be pricey and not very diverse.
Cash is king. Some places don't accept cards, so always have some Kuna on hand.
Stay hydrated. It sounds obvious, but you'll be amazed how quickly hours fly by while you’re exploring.
Watch for weather changes. The park can be rainy even in summer, so pack a light raincoat just in case.
Getting Around
Once you’re at Plitvice, you’ll be on foot most of the time. The park’s well-marked trails make navigation easy, and complimentary shuttle buses run between the Upper and Lower Lakes. Download the official Plitvice app for real-time maps and info! Taxis are available but pricey, and bike rentals outside the park are a fun alternative. Watch out for unofficial guides at the entrance offering overpriced tours.
Is Plitvice Worth It?
Absolutely! Plitvice is perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking peace. It's not for those who dislike outdoor activities or need urban entertainment. Would I go back? In a heartbeat! The enchanting scenery is worth every step, and there’s always a new trail to explore.
