Why I Love San Juan
Stepping off the plane, the warm, salty breeze of San Juan hit me. It felt like a warm hug from an old friend. I love San Juan because every corner is a riot of color and history — the pastel hues of Old San Juan's colonial buildings against the azure sea are breathtaking. The lively salsa rhythms that seem to float on the air, mingling with the tantalizing scent of mofongo, make it impossible not to smile. You can feel the city's soul in its cobblestone streets. For me, San Juan is where history and passion blend into an unforgettable experience.

One of my favorite things to do is wander the streets of Old San Juan. Every building tells a story, from the iconic El Morro fortress to the sparkling Ponce de León statue in the square. It’s history lover’s heaven. Book with Viator
Snorkeling at Escambrón Beach
Just a short ride from the city, Escambrón Beach offers vibrant marine life right off the shore. Snorkeling here is a blast! You’ll spot parrotfish and maybe a stingray or two. Book with GetYourGuide
Salsa Dance Night
You have to try a salsa night at La Factoría. Even if you're new to dancing, the energy is contagious, and the mojitos are top-notch. It’s an evening filled with laughter and local flavor. Book with Viator
Where to Eat
You have to try La Mallorquina in Old San Juan. It’s been around since 1848 and their asopao (a Puerto Rican gumbo) is soul-warming. For a modern take, Santaella in Santurce is fabulous — the ropa vieja tacos are a must. Feeling fancy? 1919 at the Condado Vanderbilt offers exquisite oceanfront dining; try the tasting menu for a true indulgence.
Honest Local Tips
Embrace Island Time: Things move slower here. A 10-minute wait might be 30. Relax, and enjoy the pace.
Sun Protection is Key: The Puerto Rican sun is fierce. Slather on sunscreen and grab a hat to avoid sunburns.
Explore Beyond San Juan: Rent a car for a day trip. El Yunque Rainforest is just an hour away and offers lush greenery and waterfalls.
Cash is Handy: While most places accept cards, small vendors prefer cash. Keep some on hand, especially for those piña coladas in Pine Grove Beach.
Nightlife is Late: Locals tend to head out around 10 p.m. or later. Nap if you need to hit those salsa clubs.
Skip Free Hotel Breakfasts: Mistake I made! Local bakeries serve amazing pastries and coffee you shouldn’t miss.
Avoid Mondays for Museums: Many museums and attractions are closed, so plan accordingly.
Getting Around
Uber is the easiest way to get around San Juan. It’s cheaper than taxis, plus you avoid any potential tourist traps. If you plan on beach hopping or day trips, renting a car is cost-effective. Buses are great for budget travelers, with fares at $0.75, but they’re less reliable. Always check the schedule ahead.
Is San Juan Worth It?
Absolutely, but with a twist! San Juan is perfect for lovers of history, beaches, and vibrant cultures. Foodies will adore the blend of Spanish, African, and Taino flavors, while night owls will thrive with the active salsa scene. If you love fast-paced, hyper-organized cities, San Juan might be a stretch, but for a laid-back, vibrant tropical escape with a rich backdrop, you couldn’t ask for more. I'd go back in a heartbeat — there's always more to discover!
