Santa Marta

Why I Love Santa Marta

Imagine the warm Caribbean breeze ruffling your hair as you sip on a fresh coconut, watching the waves gently caress the beach. That’s the moment I fell in love with Santa Marta. There's something uniquely magical about its laid-back vibe contrasted with the vibrant jungle backdrop of the Sierra Nevada. Every evening, the sunset paints the sky in hues of pink and orange, turning the coastal city into a surreal postcard image. Whether it’s the rhythm of vallenato music filling the air or the scent of sizzling arepas, Santa Marta is a sensory explosion that lures you in and makes you want to stay just a little longer.

Quick Facts

Santa Marta

Getting There

Flying into Simón Bolívar International Airport (SMR) is your best bet. From major cities, a connecting flight through Bogota with LATAM or Avianca often offers the best deals. Flights from New York take about 7-9 hours including layovers. Visa-wise, most nationalities can enter Colombia without a visa for up to 90 days, but always double-check your specific requirements.

>My Favourite Things To Do

Explore Tayrona National Park

One of my favorite things to do here is head to Tayrona National Park. It’s this lush paradise where jungle meets the sea. Hiking through the trails to reach Cabo San Juan beach is just exhilarating. Book with Viator

Visit the Lost City

You must experience the Lost City trek. It's tough but so rewarding with ancient ruins enveloped by nature. It’s like stepping into a world that time forgot. Book with GetYourGuide

Dive in Taganga

Taganga is a diver’s paradise. I spent a whole day exploring the vibrant coral reefs there — the marine life is astounding. Even beginners will find instructors ready to show you the underwater wonders. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Lulo for their arepas, I promise you’ll crave them long after your trip. Don’t leave without eating at Ouzo for their incredible Mediterranean dishes — the calamari is a must! For something quick and local, hit up Radio Burger; their tropical fruits milkshake is unforgettable.

>Honest Local Tips

Pack for all weather: Santa Marta can be unpredictable. Despite its tropical climate, some nights can be chilly, so pack a light sweater.

Learn some Spanish: Not everyone speaks English, so a few basic Spanish phrases will go a long way.

Be mindful of safety: While generally safe, like any city, keep your belongings close.

Book treks in advance: Especially for the Lost City, spots fill fast.

Currency exchanges: Rates at the airport are unfavorable. Exchange money in town instead.

Sun protection is key: Reapply sunscreen often — the Caribbean sun is unforgiving.

Mistake I made: I underestimated how early the locals start their day. Join them, especially for morning hikes.

>Getting Around

Taxis and buses are reliable ways to get around Santa Marta. For ease, download the "Easy Taxi" app. Renting a motorbike is a fun option to explore on your own schedule, but wear a helmet and drive cautiously. Be wary of unofficial taxis — always look for the license plates.

>Is Santa Marta Worth It?

Absolutely! Santa Marta is a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers. You’ll relish its blend of mountain, jungle, and sea, not to mention the warmth of its people. If you love vibrant nightlife and city vibes, you might crave more action. But for tranquility and escapism, I’d return in a heartbeat.
