The Hague

Why I Love The Hague

Let me tell you, when I first set foot in The Hague, it was like stepping into a painting. There’s this moment I can’t forget—I was sipping a coffee at a cozy café overlooking the Binnenhof, and the reflection of historic buildings in the water was just magical. The city feels like a secret that's been beautifully preserved—full of regal buildings, lush green parks, and a vibe that’s both chic and laid-back. It’s both a political hub and a beach town, which gives it a unique pulse. Trust me, The Hague is full of surprises and a perfect blend of history and modern life.

Scheveningen Beach

Don't miss Scheveningen Beach for a bit of sea breeze and people-watching. There's nothing like sitting on the beach, enjoying the lively pier, especially during sunset. The view is breathtaking! Book with GetYourGuide

>Where to Eat

You have to try Baladi Manouche for the best Lebanese bites; it's budget-friendly and perfect for a quick lunch. For dinner, head to Garoeda, an Indonesian restaurant where the rijsttafel (an array of small dishes) is a must-try. If you're after a fancy night out, don't leave without dining at The Penthouse—it’s the highest dining spot with panoramic views of the city.

>Honest Local Tips

Day trips: Rotterdam and Amsterdam are easy day trips by train from The Hague. Both are under an hour away!

Biking culture: Renting a bike is the most fun and efficient way to explore The Hague. Just watch out for the dedicated bike lanes.

Public transport card: Get an OV-chipkaart if you're planning to use trams or buses extensively. It saves time and money.

Market days: Visit the Haagse Markt, one of Europe’s largest open-air markets. The best days are Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.

Language barrier: Most people speak English, but knowing a few Dutch phrases can be handy and endearing to locals.

Packing tip: Bring layers! The Hague weather can be unpredictable, and evenings can get chilly even in summer.

Don't get caught out on Sunday: Shops may close early or not open at all, so plan your shopping around it.

>Getting Around

The Hague is super bike-friendly, so rent one for a true local experience. Trams and buses are another great way to navigate the city—download the 9292 app for schedules. A single tram ride costs about €4. Be cautious of bike theft; always lock yours securely. Also, avoid unlicensed taxis, and use the Uber app instead for safe rides.

>Is The Hague Worth It?

Absolutely, The Hague is perfect for those who love a mix of culture, history, and seaside relaxation. It's a city for both art lovers and beachgoers. Families and solo travelers will enjoy the charm and tranquility here. If you're looking for a bustling nightlife, Amsterdam might be better. But for a unique and peaceful hideaway, The Hague is a gem I’d return to in a heartbeat.
