Why I Love Utrecht
Ever had that feeling when you step into a place and it just feels right? That’s Utrecht for me. Picture this: canals lined with cozy cafes, the soft glow of street lamps reflecting in the water, and the gentle hum of bicycles whizzing by. It's the perfect mix of history and hipster vibes. I love how Utrecht offers all the charm of Amsterdam but without the crowds. Wandering around the Dom Tower or spending an afternoon in Wilhelminapark just fills me with a deep sense of calm and connection. It’s where you can enjoy lively city life and find corners that feel like your own little secret.

My Favourite Things To Do
Climb the Dom Tower
One of my favorite things to do here is climb the Dom Tower. At 112 meters, it’s the tallest church tower in the Netherlands! It might take some stamina to reach the top, but the panoramic views of the city are absolutely worthwhile. Book with Viator
Explore Museum Speelklok
You know I love a good museum, and Museum Speelklok is all about self-playing musical instruments. From snuff boxes with built-in music to grand organs, it’s surprisingly entertaining and a little bit magical. Book with GetYourGuide
Bike Along the Oudegracht
Rent a bike and cycle along the Oudegracht canal. The vibrant waterfront cafes and unique split-level design are quintessential Utrecht. You’ll feel every bit like a local, and trust me, there’s nothing like it. Book with Viator
Where to Eat
You have to try De Zwarte Vosch, a tapas bar that whips up the best Spanish bites in a cozy, buzzing atmosphere. Don’t miss the patatas bravas! For breakfast, 30ml Coffee Roasters is a must; grab a cappuccino and their breakfast sandwich for a perfect start. Lastly, don’t leave without eating at Gys — it’s organic, and the veggie burger is ridiculously tasty!
Honest Local Tips
Mind the weather: Always carry an umbrella or rain jacket. Even sunny days can turn wet in a flash.
Credit cards aren’t king: Not everywhere accepts them, so it’s good to have some cash.
Afternoon closures: Some smaller shops may close for lunch or on Mondays.
Bike theft is real: Always lock your bike, even if you think it’s safe.
Mistake I made: I missed out on booking the Dom Tower tour in advance. Snag a spot early, especially on weekends!
English is fine, but try a greeting in Dutch: Locals appreciate the effort — a simple "hallo" or "dank je" goes a long way.
Getting Around
Get an OV-chipkaart to use on buses, trams, and trains — it’s super handy. Rent a bike for that authentic Dutch experience. Utrecht is very bike-friendly, but always stay aware of traffic. Watch out for overcharged taxis outside the station and use a trusted app like Bolt if you need a ride.
Is Utrecht Worth It?
Absolutely! Utrecht is perfect for travelers looking for charm with less hustle. History buffs and culture lovers will feel right at home among its canals and cobblestone streets. If you're seeking a lively yet relaxed vibe, you’ll find it here. Those after loud nightlife might prefer Amsterdam, but for me, Utrecht’s cozy cafes and friendly streets win every time. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
