Atlanta

Why I Love Atlanta

Atlanta has this incredible energy that buzzes around the city and seeps into your soul. I remember the first time I wandered through the streets, the scent of magnolias carried on a warm breeze as I listened to the rhythmic hum of traffic and lively street chatter. What makes Atlanta truly special is its perfect blend of Southern charm and cosmopolitan cool. Whether you're soaking up history at Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthplace or exploring the vibrant art scene in the BeltLine, there's always something that fascinates me. And oh, the food! You’ve got to try the chicken and waffles — life-changing doesn’t even come close.

Quick Facts

Atlanta

Getting There

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is your gateway, being a major hub with flights coming in from all corners of the globe. If you're flying from New York, expect about a 2-hour journey; from London, you're looking at roughly 9 hours. Delta airlines usually offers good rates, and keep an eye on budget options like Spirit. Most tourists won't need a visa if they're staying less than 90 days, as part of the Visa Waiver Program. Just be sure your ESTA is sorted in advance!

>My Favourite Things To Do

Visit the Georgia Aquarium

One of my favorite things to do here is dive into the oceanic wonderland at the Georgia Aquarium. It’s the biggest in the Western Hemisphere, and those whale sharks — wow. Spend hours, or even the whole day, captivated by stunning marine life. Book with Viator

Explore the Atlanta BeltLine

Grab a bike and cruise the Atlanta BeltLine. It’s an urban revitalization phenomenon, with art installations, eateries, and stunning skyline views. Whether it's a weekend or a weekday, the BeltLine offers you the chance to mingle with locals and chill out at one of the many green spaces. Book with GetYourGuide

Discover the History at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site

Walk through civil rights history at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. His childhood home and the Ebenezer Baptist Church are the highlights that will truly inspire. Visit, reflect, and learn — it’s a deeply moving experience. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Mary Mac's Tea Room for authentic Southern comfort food — the pot likker is legendary. For a cozier, more romantic vibe, head to Canoe by the Chattahoochee River, where you must order the smoked salmon. Don't leave without eating at The Varsity, especially if you love diners. The chili dogs are pure nostalgia, and it's super affordable.

>Honest Local Tips

Visit during the festivals. Atlanta comes alive during events like the Atlanta Dogwood Festival in April — it's a feast for the senses.

Use the MARTA. The metro system is efficient and cheaper than rideshares, especially for downtown spots.

Watch for summer heat. It gets humid, so pack light clothing and hydrate!

Parking is tricky. If driving, remember parking can be sparse and costly downtown — use apps to find spots in advance.

Don't skip the neighborhoods. Explore areas like Little Five Points and Inman Park for quirky shops and great eats off the beaten path.

My mistake — skipping Stone Mountain. Just a short drive from the city, it’s worth a visit for hiking and stunning panoramic views.

>Getting Around

Download the MARTA On the Go app for metro schedules and maps. Rideshares like Uber and Lyft are ubiquitous and safe. Renting a bike through Relay Bike Share is fantastic for BeltLine exploration. Avoid rush-hour traffic if possible; congestion is a real killer here.

>Is Atlanta Worth It?

Absolutely! Atlanta is perfect for history buffs, foodies, and art lovers. It has this dynamic spirit, mixing Southern traditions with modern flair. If you’re into quiet, sleepy towns, maybe it won't be your cup of tea. But personally, I’d return in a heartbeat — there’s always something new to discover!
