Why I Love Austin

I remember the first time I stepped onto South Congress Avenue and was enveloped by that quintessential Texan charm. The aroma of brisket wafting through the warm evening air mixed with the sounds of live music spilling out from every corner. It's like Austin has a pulse, and you feel it in your bones. Beyond the famed music and food, it's the spirit of the people — eclectic, creative, and a bit wild — that makes me fall for Austin every time I visit. It’s that blend of friendliness and funkiness that makes it irresistible and you just can't help but get swept up in it.

Quick Facts

Austin

Getting There

Getting to Austin is a breeze. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) services most major airlines. From New York, it’s a 4-hour direct flight, while from London, you'll have to book a layover in a major US city. From Dubai, expect a longer journey with at least one layover. For non-US citizens, check the ESTA requirements before you travel. Once you’re there, a quick 20-minute ride will take you from the airport to downtown.

>My Favourite Things To Do

Go Paddleboarding on Lady Bird Lake

One of my favourite things to do here is paddleboarding. Gliding across the water with the cityscape as your backdrop is serene and invigorating. Rental shops are abundant, and it’s the perfect way to start your morning. Book with Viator

Explore the Street Art Scene

Strolling through East Austin, you'll find vibrant murals everywhere. Each piece tells a part of Austin's story. I love snapping pictures here and chatting with local artists. Don't miss Hope Outdoor Gallery for a truly immersive experience. Book with GetYourGuide

Live Music on The Strip

Catch live music at the Continental Club. This place is historic and embodies Austin's musical soul. The acts range from rock to blues — there's always a surprise waiting. Just go early to snag a good spot. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Franklin Barbecue — get in line early for melt-in-your-mouth brisket. The atmosphere is casual, and the wait is part of the experience. Must-order: the brisket, obviously. Prices are mid-range.

Don't leave without eating at Uchi. It's a bit posh, but the sushi is divine. The ambiance is upscale yet relaxed. Must-order: the Hot Rock Wagyu. Prices are higher, but worth every penny.

Torchy’s Tacos is great for a quick, delicious meal. The outdoor seating feels lively, and “The Democrat” taco is a must-try. Budget-friendly, too.

>Honest Local Tips

Embrace the Heat: Austin can be scorching in summer. Stay hydrated and wear light clothing. It's hotter than you'd think.

Parking is Tricky: Downtown parking can be a nightmare. Use public transit or rideshares whenever possible.

Biking is Best: Rent a bike and cruise around town. Many roads have bike lanes, and it’s a scenic way to explore.

Watch Out for Festivals: Austin loves events, but they can drive prices up and make places crowded. Check event calendars ahead.

Download Capital Metro App: This will make navigating public transport a breeze and save you some cash.

Booking BBQ Restaurants: If you’re eyeing a popular spot, reservations (if possible) or early arrival help avoid long waits.

>Getting Around

Download the CAP Metro App for hassle-free bus schedules and routes; it’s super helpful. Rideshares like Uber and Lyft are plentiful, with rides averaging around $15 downtown. Cycling is a popular option; rentals are available citywide. Avoiding rush hours is wise as traffic can be dense.

>Is Austin Worth It?

Absolutely! Austin is perfect for those who live for live music, great food, and a dash of the unexpected. If you thrive in vibrant, artsy environments, you'll feel right at home. If you're more into structured, quiet getaways, this might not be your scene. Personally, I can't wait to get back and dive deeper into the city's ever-evolving culture.
