Why I Love Detroit

Picture this: I'm standing in front of the Detroit Institute of Arts, sipping on a steamy cup of locally roasted coffee, and there's music—Motown, of course—floating through the air from a nearby street performer. That's the Detroit vibe I fell in love with. It's a city alive with resilience, creativity, and a rebirth that feels electric. From the gritty charm of Eastern Market to a night out in the trendiest speakeasies, Detroit pulses with an energy you’ve got to experience to believe. It's the kind of place where the past and the future dance together harmoniously.

Quick Facts

Getting There

Getting to Detroit is pretty straightforward. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is the main landing spot, just about a 30-minute drive from downtown. If you're flying from London, it's roughly an 8-hour flight, whereas a journey from New York is just an hour and a half. Airlines like Delta, United, and Lufthansa often offer good fares. If you're coming from Canada, Windsor is super close by, just a hop over the border. Remember, if you're not a U.S. citizen, check for visa requirements before you pack your bags.

My Favourite Things To Do

Explore the Detroit Institute of Arts

One of my favorite things to do here is spend a day at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The collection is vast, from ancient to contemporary. Diego Rivera's fresco is an absolute must-see. It's a visual journey through time and culture. Book with Viator

Stroll Through Eastern Market

Wandering Eastern Market on a Saturday is a sensory delight. You'll find farm-fresh produce, unique artisan goods, and vibrant murals. Grab a hot cider and stroll the stalls—you’ll never know what treasures you’ll find! Book with GetYourGuide

Take a Detroit River Walk

The Detroit River Walk offers stunning views of the city skyline and Windsor across the border. I love how serene it feels despite being steps from the bustling downtown. It’s perfect for a leisurely sunset stroll. Book with Viator

Where to Eat

You have to try Lafayette Coney Island for the ultimate Detroit-style hot dog. It’s unassuming and delicious. For a classier dinner, Selden Standard offers creative shared plates—I can’t resist their wood-fired cauliflower. If you’re all about dessert, Astoria Pastry Shop in Greektown serves divine baklava.

Honest Local Tips

Buy a QLine Pass: It’s the easiest way to traverse downtown cheaply. A day pass is under $3.

Explore Beyond Downtown: Midtown, Corktown, and Mexicantown are bursting with character. Don’t just stick to downtown.

Parking Can Be Tricky: If you’re driving, look for street parking or use parking apps to avoid hefty lot charges.

Visit on Game Day: If possible, catch a game at Comerica Park or Ford Field. The atmosphere is electric, even if you’re not a sports fan.

Keep an Eye on the Weather: Detroit can be unpredictable. Pack layers to be comfortable whatever the sky decides to do.

Mistake I Made: Assuming all areas are pedestrian-friendly—some parts are better explored by car or bike.

Getting Around

Download the Lyft and Uber apps for easy car service hailing. Biking is another great option, with rentals available around town. QLine trams are perfect for downtown hopping. Just a heads up—avoid unregistered cabs and always check your routes in advance to prevent tourist-targeted scams.

Is Detroit Worth It?

Absolutely, Detroit is perfect for those who crave realness and culture with a backdrop of captivating history. The music scene, the art, and the unbeatable resilience make it a city like no other. While some areas might feel a bit rough around the edges, that's part of its charm. I can’t wait to go back and experience even more of its hidden gems. Whether you're an art enthusiast, a foodie, or a history buff, Detroit’s revival story is one you'll want to be part of.
