Why I Love Belize City

Every time I step off the plane in Belize City, the humid ocean breeze wraps around me like a warm hug, instantly making me feel at home. There's something electric about this place—the way the vibrant colors of the Caribbean meet the rich, earthy tones of the rainforest. It's the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, history and culture. One morning, I found myself sipping a perfectly brewed Belizean coffee, watching the waves dance against the barrier reef. That was the moment I realized I was falling in love with Belize City—where every corner tells a story and every day has its own rhythm.

Quick Facts

Getting There

Flying into Belize City is pretty straightforward. The main hub is Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE), about 30 minutes from the city center. If you're flying from London, expect a layover, likely in Miami or Dallas, with a total travel time around 12 hours. New Yorkers can catch a direct flight, landing you in around five hours. If you're coming from Dubai, brace yourself for a longer journey—often with stops in Europe and the US. Before you book, check if you need a visa; US and EU citizens usually get a 30-day entry visa on arrival.

My Favourite Things To Do

Explore the Belize Barrier Reef

One of my favorite things to do here is explore the Belize Barrier Reef. Snorkeling in vibrant waters teeming with marine life feels like entering another world. Make sure you have your underwater camera ready! Book with Viator

Visit the Museum of Belize

Don't miss the Museum of Belize. It's housed in a former prison, which adds a quirky twist to discovering Belize's rich history and culture. Perfect for connecting with the past on a rainy afternoon. Book with GetYourGuide

Day Trip to the Mayan Ruins of Altun Ha

You absolutely must take a day trip to Altun Ha. Walking among these ancient Mayan ruins, surrounded by the jungle, is a humbling experience. You might even spot some wildlife! Book with Viator

Where to Eat

You have to try Bird's Isle, a laid-back spot by the sea. The fish tacos here are legendary, and we’re talking about meals in the $10-15 range. Don't leave without eating at Wet Lizard, especially for the conch fritters. They have a lively atmosphere right on the water. Lastly, Le Petit Cafe is perfect for breakfast; their cinnamon rolls are a delicious start to any day, affordably priced.

Honest Local Tips

Avoid Downtown at Night: While Belize City is generally safe, downtown can be sketchy after dark. Stick to well-lit, busy streets and always move in groups.

Look Out for Handicrafts: Support local artisans by buying their crafts directly from them. Great deals can be found in Fort George's local markets.

Swimwear in Town: Save the bikinis for the beach. Dress modestly in the city to respect local customs.

Stay Hydrated: The heat can sneak up on you, so keep a bottle of water handy, especially when exploring.

Tipping Culture: Tip around 10-15% in restaurants. It's appreciated and typically supplements low wages.

Cash is King: While cards are accepted in many places, having some Belize Dollars on you is always a good idea.

Bug Spray is a Must: Don’t underestimate the mosquitos, especially if you’re venturing to the jungles.

Mistake I Made: I once ignored the locals’ advice to use water taxis instead of land taxis. The water taxis are faster and often cheaper—plus, the views are unbeatable!

Getting Around

Navigating Belize City is easy with its abundance of taxis—just agree on the fare upfront as they don’t use meters. Water taxis are a picturesque and efficient way to hop between islands and coastal spots. Download the Belize Move taxis app for quick does of local transport options. Beware of unofficial taxis that might try to overcharge tourists; always use registered services.

Is Belize City Worth It?

Belize City has a unique charm that's perfect for history buffs, adventure seekers, and those looking to immerse themselves in genuine Caribbean vibes. Yet, if luxury resorts and perfect beaches are your sole focus, head to the Cayes instead. Would I go back? Absolutely—to catch up with old friends and uncover more of its hidden treasures. Whether you’re looking for rich history, tantalizing food, or easy access to jaw-dropping natural wonders, Belize City has something special waiting for you.
