La Fortuna

Why I Love La Fortuna

The first time I arrived in La Fortuna, I was greeted by the tantalizing scent of fresh rain mingled with rich volcanic soil. It's one of those magical places that feels alive. Imagine waking up to the sight of the majestic Arenal Volcano towering against a backdrop of verdant jungle, its presence both serene and powerful. The town itself is a vibrant mix of adventure-seekers and laid-back locals. I love how easy it is to lose track of time here — whether you're exploring hidden waterfalls or soaking in natural hot springs, every moment feels infused with the pulse of nature.

>Quick Facts >Getting There

Getting to La Fortuna is pretty straightforward. You’ll likely fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José. From there, it's about a three-hour drive. I found renting a car the best to get around — plus, the drive is stunning! You could also take a shuttle or local bus if you're a bit more budget-conscious. No visa is usually required for stays up to 90 days for US and EU citizens, but always double-check current requirements.

>Where to Stay

>Where to Eat

You have to try Soda Viquez, a local spot offering authentic Costa Rican flavors — order the casado with fish. For something a bit more stylish, head to Don Rufino's for exceptional farm-to-table dining — their beef tenderloin is divine. And don't leave without eating at La Cava del Bagaces for a romantic dinner nestled in a wine cellar atmosphere — try their homemade ravioli.

>Honest Local Tips

Ask Local Experts: Chat with locals or guides for hidden gems off the beaten path — they'll point you to the best spots!

Early Bird Gets the Worm: Start your days early. Activities like hiking are cooler and less crowded in the morning.

Remember the Rain: Even in the dry season, always carry a lightweight rain jacket — the weather turns quickly.

Money Matters: USD is widely accepted, but having some local colones is handy for smaller transactions.

Foodie Alert: Try the street food for a cheap and authentic taste of Costa Rica. It’s delicious and wallet-friendly.

Mistake I Made: I underestimated the power of Arenal’s sun. Bring sunscreen, even on cloudy days — I learned the hard way!

>Getting Around

Renting a car is the most flexible way, but if you want to save money, the local bus system is reliable if a bit slow. Taxis are plentiful — just agree on a fare beforehand or make sure the meter’s on. Downloading an app like Waze is helpful for navigation. La Fortuna is generally safe, but keep an eye out for the occasional tourist scam, like inflated taxi fares.

>Is La Fortuna Worth It?

Absolutely! La Fortuna is perfect for adventure lovers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone craving a bit of tranquility mingled with thrill. The stunning landscapes, combined with a chill, welcoming vibe, make it unforgettable. If you're not into outdoor activities or prefer bustling city life, La Fortuna might feel too tranquil. But personally, I can't wait to go back — there's always more to explore and experience!
