Why I Love San Jose

San Jose hit me with a wave of warmth and vibrancy from the moment I landed. The first thing that caught my senses was the aroma of rich coffee mingling with the cool mountain breeze. There’s a youthful energy here—everything from the street art in Barrio Amón to the bustling markets makes you feel alive. I love how the city balances its bustling urban life with pockets of green spaces like Parque La Sabana. It’s a city you can feel, taste, and stroll through while enjoying the camaraderie of locals who treat you like an old friend.

Quick Facts

Getting There

Flying into San Jose is relatively straightforward. Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) is the main gateway and is located just 20 km from the city center. Airlines like American Airlines, Delta, and British Airways offer direct flights. From New York, you're looking at about 5 hours, and from London, it’s around 11 hours with a layover. A visa isn't required for U.S., Canadian, and EU travelers for up to 90 days, but always double-check current requirements.

My Favourite Things To Do

Explore the National Museum

One of my favorite things to do here is explore the National Museum of Costa Rica. Housed in a former military barracks, the building itself is an attraction. Inside, you’ll dive into fascinating exhibits on Costa Rican history and culture. The butterfly garden is a magical bonus! Book with Viator

Wander through Mercado Central

Another highlight is wandering through Mercado Central. It's a sensory overload of flavors, colors, and sounds. Try some local snacks, browse leather goods, and just soak up the lively local atmosphere. Get ready to haggle a bit! Book with GetYourGuide

Visit La Sabana Park

La Sabana Metropolitan Park is like the lungs of the city. You’ll find locals jogging, walking dogs, and playing soccer. It’s a perfect spot for a picnic or a leisurely stroll. I love people-watching here—everyone’s so friendly! Book with Viator

Where to Eat

You have to try La Esquina de Buenos Aires for some of the best Argentinian steak; the ambiance is cozy and romantic. Another must is Soda Tapia, a local institution for Costa Rican food, where you can't miss the casado. For a casual bite, head to Cafeoteca; their coffee selection is a dream, paired superbly with a slice of Tres Leches cake.

Honest Local Tips

Use Uber: It's cheaper and more reliable than taxis. Plus, it's a great way to practice your Spanish with friendly drivers.

Watch Out for Weather: San Jose can surprise you with sudden showers. Always have a light rain jacket or umbrella handy.

Cash is King: While credit cards are accepted in many places, smaller markets prefer cash. Always keep small bills.

Try Public Transport: Buses are efficient and a great way to see daily life, though crowded. Just watch your belongings.

Avoid Mondays for Museums: Many are closed, so plan accordingly. Instead, visit parks and markets.

Mistake I Made: I underestimated the traffic—it’s intense. Give yourself extra time to get anywhere, especially the airport.

Getting Around

Download the Uber app before you arrive. Buses are the cheapest option—fares are around ₡350. Always keep an eye on your stuff. Walking in neighborhoods like Barrio Escalante is lovely. Avoid renting a car unless you're venturing out of the city; traffic and parking are challenging.

Is San Jose Worth It?

Absolutely, San Jose is perfect for those who love culture, local vibes, and convenience as their gateway to exploring Costa Rica's natural beauty. It might not be for you if you're solely looking for beach time. Would I go back? In a heartbeat! There's something incredibly genuine about this city that just draws you in.
