Bocas del Toro

Why I Love Bocas del Toro

Landing on the tiny airstrip in Bocas del Toro, I immediately smelled the salty sea air mingling with the lush green of the tropical rainforest. There’s a vibe here that I adore—like the world slowed down just for you and me to enjoy coconut water straight from the source. It’s that feeling when you take your first bike ride along the sandy paths of Isla Bastimentos or when a dolphin leaps next to your boat. Bocas has this way of making you feel you’ve discovered a hidden corner of paradise, where vibrant Caribbean culture meets untouched natural beauty.

Quick Facts

Bocas del Toro

Getting There

Bocas del Toro is quite accessible with a small airport on Isla Colon (BOC). Direct flights from Panama City take about an hour and are offered by Air Panama. If you’re coming from San José, Costa Rica, Nature Air offers services too. For a cheaper yet adventurous option, consider a bus to Almirante from where you’ll hop on a 30-minute ferry ride to Bocas Town. Most nationalities do not need a visa for stays under 90 days, but do check specific entry requirements before you fly.

>My Favourite Things To Do

Island Hopping

One of my favourite things to do here is island hop! Each island has its unique allure, like the sloth-hugged trees on Isla Bastimentos or the coral reefs surrounding Zapatilla. Charter a small boat and let the local captains guide you—you'll feel like a true explorer. Book with Viator

Dolphin Watching

Glide over crystal-clear waters to Dolphin Bay, where you can spot these playful creatures in their natural habitat. There’s nothing quite like seeing dolphins flitting around your boat, and early mornings are the best time to catch them. Book with GetYourGuide

Diving & Snorkeling

Discover the underwater world of Bocas by diving or snorkeling. The vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life will leave you speechless. Whether you’re an experienced diver or a first-timer, the local shops offer gear and guidance. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try El Ultimo Refugio for a lovely waterfront dining experience; their seared tuna is to die for. For laid-back vibes, head to Bibi’s on the Beach on Carenero, a tropical hut serving incredible coconut curry shrimp.

Don’t leave without eating at Congo Tiki Bar near Bocas Town. They serve tasty, affordable Costa Rican-Caribbean fusion dishes, and the cocktails are perfect for sunset sipping.

>Honest Local Tips

Bring Cash: While many places accept credit cards, smaller eateries and tour operators often prefer cash.

Rain Ready: Even in the dry season, occasional showers pop up. I learned the hard way one damp afternoon—bring a light rain jacket!

Sunset Spots: Head to Playa Estrella for stunning sunsets that Instagram can’t do justice to.

Avoid the Rip-offs: Water taxis are everywhere, haggle a bit to avoid tourist prices—locals pay less!

Watch Your Drink: Bars can get lively, stay aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your drink.

Keep it Eco-Friendly: Use reef-safe sunscreen and carry a reusable water bottle. The environment will thank you!

>Getting Around

Download the app MiBus to check water taxi schedules or hire a bike to explore the islands. Water taxis are affordable — a few dollars can take you between islands. Just confirm the price upfront. Taxis on land are scarce, so walking is a common and pleasant option in Bocas Town.

>Is Bocas del Toro Worth It?

Absolutely, Bocas del Toro is a slice of paradise perfect for those who love the idea of island time, natural beauty, and vibrant culture. Beach lovers, divers, and anyone with a penchant for laid-back life will feel right at home. It’s not the hustle and bustle kind of destination, so if shopping and city lights are your style, it might not hit the mark. But for a taste of the Caribbean that feels both welcoming and wild, I’d go back in a heartbeat.
