Why I Love Florianópolis
When I first set foot on the sandy shores of Florianópolis, it was like stepping into a postcard from paradise. Picture this: the salty breeze kissing your skin, a kaleidoscope of blue hues glistening in the ocean, caipirinhas that dance on your taste buds, and the rhythm of samba echoing in the streets. This island city, affectionately known as “Floripa,” marries the vibrancy of Brazilian culture with serene natural beauty. It’s where my adventurous spirit found a home climbing dunes by day and dining by moonlit beaches at night. If you're looking for a slice of heaven with a laid-back vibe, Floripa is it.

Reaching Florianópolis is pretty straightforward. If you're flying in from the U.S., there’s a direct flight from Miami with LATAM Airlines that takes about 10 hours. From Europe, including London, you'll likely connect through São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro—expect a total travel time of around 15-18 hours. The city’s airport, Hercílio Luz International Airport (FLN), is just 8 miles from the island's center. Good news: U.S. and EU citizens don’t need a visa for stays up to 90 days.

Exploring Ribeirão da Ilha
Explore the charming colonial village of Ribeirão da Ilha. With its quaint architecture and oyster farms, it’s perfect for a leisurely afternoon of strolls and seafood sampling. Don’t skip the local oyster tasting! Book with Viator
>Where to EatYou have to try Ostradamus in Ribeirão da Ilha. Their oysters are legendary, and the waterfront seating is dreamy. Prato Popular in Centro has this feijoada that’s comforting and classic. Roughly $10-20. Don’t leave without eating at Box 32 in Mercado Público. Their pastéis, especially the shrimp one, are addictive. Prices hover around $5.
>Honest Local TipsLearn Basic Portuguese: English isn’t widely spoken here, so a few Portuguese phrases will go a long way.
Beware of Parking Scams: I once paid double for parking. Look for legit lots, and avoid random guys waving you into spaces.
Tap Water’s a No-Go: Stick to bottled water. Trust me, your stomach will thank you.
Late-Night Buses Are Rare: Buses are cheap, but service after 10 p.m. can be spotty. Plan accordingly or grab an Uber.
High Season Hustle: December to February gets crowded and expensive. Book accommodations ahead during this time.
Cash is King: Many smaller establishments don’t accept cards, so always keep some cash on you.
Local SIM Card: Grab a Claro or Vivo SIM card for reliable and affordable mobile data.
>Getting AroundDownload 99 or Uber for the easiest way to get around. Buses are budget-friendly (around $1 per ride) and mostly safe, but avoid them late at night. Car rentals are handy, especially if you’re exploring beaches off the beaten path, but be wary of narrow, winding roads. Watch out for unofficial “fare adjusters” who might try to scam you with inflated taxi fares.
>Is Florianópolis Worth It?Absolutely! Florianópolis is perfect for beach lovers, adventure seekers, and anyone craving a taste of authentic Brazilian culture. It’s an ideal destination if you’re looking for a mix of relaxation and exploration, with its array of stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife. However, if you're solely after metropolitan hustle or luxury shopping, you might be better off in São Paulo or Rio. I’d go back in a heartbeat for more dune surfing, hiking adventures, and yes, those oysters!
