Why I Love Natal
Imagine sinking your toes into warm, golden sands with a caipirinha in hand as you gaze out over the endless expanse of turquoise waves—the kind that makes everything else just melt away. Natal, with its sun-kissed beaches and laid-back vibes, stole my heart almost instantly. I remember my first stroll along Ponta Negra Beach as the salty breeze whispered through the palm trees, giving me a sense of freedom and adventure. This coastal gem is not just about the beaches; it’s about the blend of culture, history, and the friendliest locals you’ll ever meet. Trust me, if you love sun, sea, and a splash of samba, Natal has it all.

From London and New York, you’ll find one-stop flights with LATAM or TAP Air Portugal, usually connecting through Lisbon or São Paulo. Flights from Dubai take longer, around 20 hours with a couple of stops. Visa-wise, U.S. and EU passport holders can enter Brazil for up to 90 days without a visa. Always double-check entry requirements before you go as they can change.

>Where to EatYou have to try Camarões Potiguar! This place is all about seafood, especially shrimp, and the moqueca here is a revelation. The vibe is casual but lively, perfect for dinner with friends. Don’t leave without eating at Casa de Taipa where the tapiocas are to die for—light, filling, and just the right kind of chewy. For something uniquely local, head to Paçoca de Pilão. Order the baião de dois, and thank me later—it's comfort food with a rich blend of flavors.
>Honest Local TipsLearn a few Portuguese phrases. The locals appreciate it and you’ll find it easier to navigate. English isn’t widely spoken everywhere.
Beware of the sun. Sounds obvious, but the sun here is intense. Apply and reapply sunscreen, and don’t skimp on hydration.
Check the tide schedules. If you’re planning beach activities, tides can make all the difference for swimming and boat tours.
Avoid traffic with timing. Plan your city travels after the morning rush or late afternoon when roads are quieter.
Taxi and bus scams. Always check if the taxi meter is running, and be cautious about unsolicited offers at the airport.
Mistake I made - Currency exchange. I assumed exchanging at the airport was best. Nope! Better rates are found in the city.
>Getting AroundDownload the 99 taxi app—it’s reliable and safe for getting around town. Buses are cheap but can be confusing if you don’t speak Portuguese. Renting a car is great if you’re planning out-of-town adventures, as it gives you freedom and convenience. Just be wary of aggressive driving habits common in the area.
>Is Natal Worth It?Absolutely! Natal is perfect for those who crave beach time, love adventure activities, and enjoy a laid-back environment with a dash of culture. It might not be for someone after a fast-paced city break or a cultural deep dive. But for me, that mix of sun, sand, and samba spirit was just what I needed. Would I go back? In a heartbeat—there’s just something magical about it.
