Why I Love Salt Lake City

Imagine waking up with the crisp mountain air on your face, the Wasatch Mountains towering over you, and a sense of peace that urban life rarely offers. The first time I visited Salt Lake City, I was taken aback by its natural beauty juxtaposed with vibrant city life. It's that moment when you're sipping a strong, local coffee at a quirky downtown café and thinking about how you can hit the slopes in an hour or indulge in a rooftop concert later. Salt Lake City has this perfect blend of the chill outdoorsy lifestyle with urban sophistication. Every time I’m there, I find myself embracing both the artist and the adventurer in me.

Quick Facts

Getting There

To get to Salt Lake City, you’ll most likely fly into Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). It's well-connected with major cities. From New York, it’s around a 5-hour flight; from London, expect about 11 hours with a layover. Flights are often budget-friendly on airlines like Delta and Southwest. If you're driving from nearby states, it’s a scenic journey either way. Check the ESTA visa requirements if you're coming from abroad.

Where to Stay

Budget (under $80/night)

When I'm going budget in Salt Lake City, Bposhtels is my go-to. It’s a hostel vibe without losing the charm, perfect for solo travelers or backpackers wanting to mingle. It's clean, comfy, and right in the heart of downtown. Check availability on Expedia

Mid-Range ($80-200/night)

Salt Lake Plaza Hotel at Temple Square offers a bit more comfort without breaking the bank. I love its proximity to major attractions and its warm, welcoming service. Plus, there's a free shuttle from the airport! Check availability on Expedia

Luxury ($200+/night)

For luxury, you can't beat the Grand America Hotel. It's a splurge, but the European-inspired décor, spa facilities, and unbeatable views make it worth every penny. If you’re celebrating something special, this is your place. Check availability on Expedia

My Favourite Things To Do

Explore Temple Square

One of my favorite things to do here is exploring Temple Square. Whether or not you’re into architecture, you can’t help but marvel at the detailed craftsmanship of the Salt Lake Temple. Plus, the gardens are a delight during spring! Book with Viator

Hike Ensign Peak

For an unbeatable view of the city, hiking up Ensign Peak is essential. It’s a short hike but offers panoramic vistas that are especially magical at sunset. Bring your camera! Book with GetYourGuide

Discover the Natural History Museum

I could wander through the Natural History Museum of Utah for hours. The exhibits are so immersive—and that dinosaur collection, wow! It’s a perfect escape for both adults and kids. Book with Viator

Where to Eat

You have to try The Red Iguana for authentic Mexican. The Mole Negro is out of this world! Don't leave without eating at HSL; their modern American dishes never disappoint—try the ricotta dumplings. For breakfast or brunch, The Rose Establishment serves fantastic coffee and an avocado toast you'll dream about later. Prices range from $10 to $30 per meal.

Honest Local Tips

Embrace the Outdoors: Even if skiing's not your thing, try snowshoeing or just enjoy a walk around the foothills. The scenery is a free bonus.

Public Transit: The TRAX light rail is surprisingly easy and super handy to get around downtown without a rental car.

Altitude Awareness: Salt Lake City is at a higher elevation than you might be used to. Staying hydrated helps avoid altitude sickness.

Closed on Sundays: A lot of places may close on Sundays. Always check ahead and plan!

Avoiding the Rush: If you can, avoid downtown parking during peak hours. It gets wild sometimes.

Mistake I Made: I once underestimated the weather; layers are essential no matter the season.

Use Ride-Sharing Apps: Lyft and Uber are widespread; they’re often cheaper than local taxis.

Getting Around

Salt Lake City is pretty navigable. Renting a car is great for venturing into the mountains, but for city hops, rely on the UTA TRAX system. Scooters are scattered around as well. Just watch out for bike lanes. An Uber or Lyft from the airport to downtown costs around $15-$20. Be cautious of parking enforcement—it’s thorough!

Is Salt Lake City Worth It?

Salt Lake City is a gem, especially for those who appreciate a mix of outdoor beauty and urban comfort. It's perfect if you're into skiing, hiking, or just exploring a city with unique cultural roots. However, if you're seeking a lively nightlife, options are a bit limited compared to other cities. Still, I’d go back in a heartbeat, eager to find new trails and taste more local eats.
