Why I Love Thessaloniki

There's something about Thessaloniki that captures your heart the moment you step foot on its lively streets. I remember my first morning there, sipping a strong Greek coffee, the aroma mingling with the salty breeze from the Thermaic Gulf. The city is a mosaic of history, culture, and youthful energy—imagine Byzantine walls standing guardian over buzzing markets and trendy bars. It's a city where ancient ruins casually punctuate your walk to the café. Thessaloniki's charm lies in its contradictions, a seamless blend of old-world elegance and vibrant modern life. It’s a place that feels both familiar and utterly unique, like stumbling upon a beloved old book with hidden new chapters.

Getting There

Reaching Thessaloniki is fairly straightforward. Thessaloniki Airport "Makedonia" (SKG) connects directly with major cities across Europe. From London, a direct flight is about 3 to 3.5 hours. New York travelers can connect via major European hubs like Frankfurt or Paris, with total travel time around 12-14 hours. Dubai to Thessaloniki flights are often quicker with direct options being around 5 hours. Visa-wise, entering Greece requires a Schengen Visa for non-EU visitors. Don’t forget to check for any pandemic-related entry requirements.

>Where to Eat

You have to try Karaván for a taste of savory Bougatsa—the flaky pastry melts in your mouth. Trust me, it’s heaven.

Don’t leave without eating at Molyvos Taverna. Their seafood is fresh and prepared traditionally, and the vibe transports you to a Greek island.

And oh, Ergon Agora is a gem! It’s both a market and restaurant where you should definitely order the moussaka. Expect mid-range prices but the flavors are pure luxury.

>Honest Local Tips

Stay Hydrated: Greek summers are hot! Always carry a bottle of water—especially if you’re walking a lot.

Learn Basic Greek: A few Greek words can go a long way to win smiles and good service, especially in more local areas.

Be Mindful of Siesta: Many local shops close mid-afternoon for a siesta. Plan your shopping around it.

Use Public Transport: It’s reliable and budget-friendly. Grab a Thessaloniki Transport Card for easy tram and bus access.

Avoid Tourist Traps: Try eating where the locals do—restaurants off the beaten track often have the best food.

Mistake I Made: Not booking museum tickets in advance can lead to long waits. Always pre-book the big ones!

Cash is King: While cards are accepted, having cash on hand for smaller shops and markets is wise.

>Getting Around

The city’s compact nature makes it perfect for walking, but the local OASTH buses are great for longer distances. The No. 50 cultural route bus is a budget-friendly self-guided tour option. Taxis can be an affordable option if you’re splitting the cost, just ensure the meter is on. Beware of potential taxi scams by only using official taxis or ride-sharing apps like Uber.

>Is Thessaloniki Worth It?

Absolutely, Thessaloniki is a treasure trove of experiences wrapped in warm Greek hospitality. It’s perfect for history buffs, foodies, and anyone looking to explore a vibrant mix of cultures and eras. If you're someone who thrives in a lively, youthful atmosphere yet appreciates historical depth, you’ll love it here. It might not suit those seeking a traditional, laid-back beach vacation as it's definitely urban at heart. I’d return in a heartbeat—there’s always something new waiting around the corner in Thessaloniki!
