Why I Love Adelaide

When I think of Adelaide, the first thing that hits me is the smell of the ocean mingling with the scent of fresh eucalyptus. It's a city that feels like it's giving you a warm hug while offering a glass of local Shiraz. I fell in love with Adelaide's balanced charm: it's big enough to explore but small enough to feel intimately connected to. Wandering down Rundle Mall, discovering hidden laneway bars, or watching the sunset on Glenelg Beach felt like secrets I wanted to share. Plus, the people! They’re laid-back, always up for a chat, and genuinely proud of their city.

Quick Facts

Adelaide

Getting There

Getting to Adelaide is pretty straightforward. If you’re flying from London, you’re looking at a roughly 25-hour journey with a layover, usually in Dubai or Singapore. From New York, you can expect a 22-hour flight with a stop in Los Angeles or Dallas. The cheapest airlines are often Qantas, Emirates, and Singapore Airlines. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date, and apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) online before you go.

>My Favourite Things To Do

Exploring the Barossa Valley

One of my favourite things to do in Adelaide is escape to the Barossa Valley. It’s just an hour's drive from the city, but you’ll feel worlds away. Honestly, sipping on world-class wines surrounded by vineyards is my kind of bliss. Make sure you visit Seppeltsfield Winery – it’s like stepping into history. Book with Viator

Strolling Through Adelaide Botanic Garden

You’ll adore the Botanic Garden, a serene spot right in the city's heart. It's perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic under the sprawling trees. Don't miss the Amazon Waterlily Pavilion – it's otherworldly! Perfect for posting those Insta-worthy shots. Book with GetYourGuide

Discovering Adelaide Central Market

You can't visit Adelaide without experiencing the Central Market. It's a sensory overload in the best possible way – the colors, sounds, and smells are intoxicating. Grab a coffee and wander the stalls, tasting your way through all kinds of local goodies. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try Africola on East Terrace. It's loud, vibrant, and the Afro-inspired food is a delight. Order the peri-peri chicken – trust me on this. Roughly AUD 60 per person.

Don't leave without eating at Orana. It’s a splurge, but each dish is a work of art that tells a story of Australia’s native produce. Expect to spend around AUD 200 per person.

For something casual, head to Peel Street. It has a buzzing atmosphere and the kingfish sashimi is to die for. Prices are around AUD 40 per person.

>Honest Local Tips

Explore the Suburbs: Don’t just stick to the city center. Suburbs like Norwood and North Adelaide have their unique charms and food scenes.

Public Transport Card: Buy a MetroCARD for trams and buses. It saves you cash rather than buying single tickets.

Beach Trip: Catch tram 96 to Glenelg Beach. It’s a fantastic way to spend a day, and you don’t have to worry about parking.

Be Weather-Ready: Adelaide can be four seasons in a day, especially in spring. Carry a light jacket even if it’s sunny.

A Mistake I Made: I underestimated how early shops close. Most shut by 5 PM, except Thursdays when they extend to 9 PM.

Free WIFI: Look for libraries or McDonald's for free reliable internet.

Dress Codes: While Adelaide is pretty casual, some bars and clubs have strict dress codes. Keep a blazer handy if you plan a night out.

>Getting Around

Adelaide is wonderfully easy to navigate. Download the 'MetroMATE' app to plan your tram and bus routes – it’s a lifesaver! Rideshares like Uber are affordable, and hiring a bike is fantastic if you're feeling energetic. Taxis are readily available, but can be pricier. Watch out for peak hour tram crowds; they can get busy, but it’s all part of the Adelaide hustle and bustle.

>Is Adelaide Worth It?

Absolutely, Adelaide is worth the visit if you're after a laid-back vibe with access to the finer things in life. It's perfect for foodies, wine lovers, and history buffs. The atmosphere is genuinely welcoming. If you're seeking thrilling action or extensive nightlife, you might want more fast-paced cities. But let me tell you, there's a unique satisfaction in leisurely enjoying this South Australian gem. I can’t wait to go back!
