Why I Love Byron Bay

You know that moment when you step off the plane, take a breath, and just feel that you’ve arrived somewhere effortlessly cool? That’s Byron Bay. The salty breeze of the Pacific Ocean and the sun that seems to shine a little warmer make it a slice of paradise. I love wandering barefoot on the beach, catching the early morning surfers silhouetted against the sunrise. It's that laid-back vibe mixed with bohemian charm that draws me in, the echos of a thousand acoustic guitars being strummed around campfires. Seriously, Byron makes you want to ditch your itinerary and go with the flow.

Quick Facts

Getting There

Flying into Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (BNK) is the most convenient, being just 30 minutes away from Byron Bay proper. Flights from Sydney are quick, under an hour and often quite affordable with carriers like Jetstar and Virgin Australia. From New York or London, expect a longer journey with a layover in Sydney or Brisbane. Brisbane International Airport (BNE) is another option, about a two-hour drive. Don't forget your ETA visa if you're coming from outside Australia, easily obtainable online!

My Favourite Things To Do

Surf at The Pass

One of my favorite things to do here is catch a wave at The Pass. The surf is legendary, and even watching locals carve through the ocean is a thrill. Grab a rental from one of the local surf shops and hit the waves—it’s exhilarating! [Book with Viator](https://www.viator.com/search/Byron Bay?pid=P00295719&mcid=42383&medium=api)

Cape Byron Lighthouse Walk

You have to do the Cape Byron Lighthouse walk. It's a stunning trek ending with panoramic views where you might even spot whales during migration season. Go at sunrise and thank me later. [Book with GetYourGuide](https://www.getyourguide.com/s/?q=Byron Bay&partner_id=0LBM1CC)

Kayak with Dolphins

Paddling out into the blue waters, surrounded by dolphins, is something you can't miss. It's the kind of once-in-a-lifetime experience that sticks with you and makes for incredible stories. [Book with Viator](https://www.viator.com/search/Byron Bay?pid=P00295719&mcid=42383&medium=api)

Where to Eat

You have to try The Farm at Byron Bay. It’s all about farm-to-table goodness, set in a beautiful rustic environment. Try the pork belly—it’s divine. Prices are in the $$ range.

Don’t leave without eating at Folk Byron Bay. It’s the kind of chill café where you could easily lose a morning sipping flat whites and munching on their epic avocado toast. Simple and perfect. $

For a sunset dinner, head to Beach Byron Bay. The views are as stunning as the fresh seafood pasta. Ideal for a romantic evening, priced $$$ but worth every cent.

Honest Local Tips

Parking can be tricky in town, especially during festivals. Try free spots just outside the main area and walk into town.

Pack layers since Byron mornings can be cool, even if the day heats up. Trust me, you’ll be grateful on those dawn lighthouse walks.

Don’t skip the hinterland! The surrounding areas like Nimbin and Bangalow are gems with unique vibes. Rent a car and explore!

Avoid touristy Main Beach on busy days; instead, check out quieter spots like Wategos Beach for a more laid-back feel.

Check out the local markets for unique finds. Byron Community Market happens monthly and offers everything from local art to vegan treats.

Sun protection is key! The Aussie sun is harsh; don’t underestimate it. Broad-spectrum sunscreen is a must.

Book accommodations early during peak seasons. Byron fills up fast, and prices jump!

Getting Around

Having a car is definitely handy in Byron for flexibility, and rentals are fairly priced. Bicycles can be rented easily if you prefer staying in town and hopping between beaches. Download the Go Byron app for taxi bookings—it works like a charm. Be aware of peak season traffic; it can get hectic. Watch out for offers from shuttle services if you’re coming from Brisbane—great budget option!

Is Byron Bay Worth It?

Absolutely! Byron Bay is perfect for surfers, nature lovers, and anyone looking to unwind with a laid-back vibe. It's a true escape from city madness, and once you're there, you’ll understand the hype. That said, if you aren't into beach life, it might not be your favorite stop, but for most, its charm is irresistible. I'd go back in a heartbeat, armed with more sunscreen this time!
