Why I Love Cairns

Picture this: the soft rustling of palm trees under a warm tropical breeze and the endless horizon where the verdant greens of rainforest meet the azure blues of the Coral Sea. That’s Cairns for you. The first time I dipped my toes into its crystal-clear waters, I felt an overwhelming sense of connection with nature. Whether it’s the exhilarating experience of scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef, or the serene walks through the lush Daintree Rainforest, Cairns is a paradise for nature lovers. I adore how this vibrant city seamlessly blends adventure with relaxation. Plus, there’s nothing like watching the sunset over the Esplanade Lagoon with a scoop of creamy gelato in hand.

Quick Facts

Getting There

Flying into Cairns is pretty straightforward. Cairns Airport (CNS) is the main entry point, with frequent flights from major cities like Sydney and Brisbane. From London or New York, you’re looking at a couple of legs — usually a stop in Asia or through Australia’s domestic hubs. I found airlines like Qantas and Singapore Airlines reliable for this journey. If you're coming from Dubai, Emirates offers seamless connections. Visa requirements vary, so make sure you apply for an eVisitor or Electronic Travel Authority if needed before hopping on that plane!

My Favourite Things To Do

Snorkeling at Great Barrier Reef

One of my favourite things to do here is snorkel at the Great Barrier Reef. It’s like swimming in an aquarium with vibrant coral gardens and incredible marine life. Even for a beginner like me, the experience was mesmerizing and unforgettable. Book with Viator

Exploring Daintree Rainforest

Don’t miss the chance to wander through Daintree Rainforest. This ancient ecosystem is teeming with wildlife and captivating plant species. I loved the guided night tours where the jungle comes alive with creatures! Book with GetYourGuide

Kuranda Scenic Railway

Taking the Kuranda Scenic Railway was a highlight, offering stunning views of waterfalls and the Barron Gorge. It’s a laid-back way to soak in the dramatic landscapes. Plus, the history behind the railway is fascinating. Book with Viator

Where to Eat

You have to try Prawn Star; it’s a unique floating restaurant where fresh seafood is a must. Imagine sitting in the marina, devouring platters of prawns. Don’t leave without eating at The Chambers, a cozy place with a fantastic smashed avo on sourdough. And for dessert, head to Caffiend — their coffee is legendary and pairs perfectly with their homemade sweets.

Honest Local Tips

Reef and Rainforest Can Get Crowded: If you want to avoid the crowds, try visiting popular sites early in the morning.

The Sun is Intense: I underestimated this! Sunscreen is essential, and make sure it's reef-safe for your snorkeling trips.

Public Transport is Limited: Renting a car can be worth it if you’re planning day trips to the surrounding areas.

Watch Out for Jellyfish: Especially during the stinger season (November to May), always heed local warnings.

Free Activities Galore: Don’t miss out on free things like the Botanical Gardens or an evening stroll along the Cairns Esplanade, which often has local markets and music.

Skip the Expensive Tours: I found local operators in town offering last-minute deals, perfect if you're on a budget.

Getting Around

The center of Cairns is easy to explore on foot, but for exploring further afield, local buses are reliable. Apps like Uber are popular here and great for hassle-free rides. Renting a bike is another fun and eco-friendly way to get around. Watch out for local scams, especially with tours that seem too good to be true — always double-check operator credentials.

Is Cairns Worth It?

Absolutely! Perfect for thrill-seekers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone looking to escape into a tropical paradise. If you love diving into outdoor adventures, Cairns should top your list. On the flip side, if you're after a city buzzing with nightlife or cultural experiences, you might find it a bit lacking. I’d return in a heartbeat, maybe just for another dive into the Reef!
