Why I Love São Paulo

Imagine a city where sambas blend with skyscrapers, and you’ve just scratched the surface of São Paulo. For me, it was the aroma of freshly brewed Brazilian coffee mingling with the rhythm of jazz in a hidden corner café. That was the moment I fell for São Paulo. It's this dynamic fusion of creativity and energy that captures my heart. Whether you’re exploring its vibrant street art or getting lost in its bustling culinary scene, São Paulo is a city that never sits still. It’s the kind of place where every visit feels like a new adventure.

Quick Facts

Getting There

Flights to São Paulo land at either Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) or Congonhas Airport (CGH). From New York, non-stop flights take around 10 hours with airlines like LATAM and American Airlines. If you're flying from London, expect a 12-hour journey. For those in Dubai, flights are longer at about 15 hours with a layover, commonly more affordable on Emirates. Visa requirements vary, so check if you need one before you go!

Where to Stay

Budget (under $80/night)

I stumbled upon Soul Hostel, perfect for the social traveler. It’s cozy, with clean dorms and a friendly vibe. Located in the lively Jardins area, it's walking distance to shops and cafes. Chat with travelers while sipping caipirinhas in the common area. Check availability on Expedia

Mid-Range ($80-200/night)

Hotel Fasano is where urban comfort meets style. It’s in the charming neighborhood of Vila Madalena, great for those who want a mix of tranquility and nightlife. Each room is modern, with eclectic art and a hint of luxury. Check availability on Expedia

Luxury ($200+/night)

The Tivoli Mofarrej São Paulo is luxury redefined. It’s in the heart of Paulista Avenue and perfect for a lavish stay. Picture spacious rooms with breathtaking city views. Indulge in their spa treatments after a day of exploring. Check availability on Expedia

My Favourite Things To Do

Explore Avenida Paulista

One of my favorite things to do here is wander down Avenida Paulista. This iconic avenue is a cultural hub brimming with museums, galleries, and street performers. Sundays are extra special when the street closes to cars. Book with Viator

Dive into São Paulo's Art Scene

You can't miss the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) with its remarkable modern architecture and fantastic art collection. I love how its hanging galleries make everything feel so accessible. Book with GetYourGuide

Stroll in Ibirapuera Park

Ibirapuera Park is a perfect escape into nature. It’s where I go to unwind, surrounded by locals jogging or picnicking. The park is also home to cutting-edge architecture. Book with Viator

Where to Eat

You have to try D.O.M for a Michelin-starred twist on Brazilian flavors. The atmosphere is sophisticated, and the "Ants" dish is a must-try! For a more local vibe, don't leave without eating at Mercado Municipal. Grab a mortadella sandwich as big as your head. For dessert, head to Bacio di Latte for some of the creamiest gelato around. Prices range from moderate to high-end, but worth every cent!

Honest Local Tips

Avoid Rush Hour: Traffic here can be intense—like New York on steroids! Plan your travels around the city to dodge the 7-9 AM and 5-7 PM rush.

Learn Basic Portuguese: Many people speak English, but you'll win smiles with even a few words in Portuguese.

Beware of Pickpockets: Busy spots like Avenida Paulista can be hotspots for pickpockets. Keep your belongings close.

Free Museum Days: Many museums have a free entry day, usually on Sundays. MASP and Pinacoteca are worth the visit!

Use Uber for Safety: While taxis are safe, Uber provides a safer alternative, especially at night.

Street Food Staples: Don’t ignore street vendors selling "pastel" and "caldo de cana." They’re cheap and delicious!

Mistake I Made: I underestimated São Paulo’s size. Plan your activities in clusters to avoid wasting time commuting.

Getting Around

The metro system is your best friend—clean, safe, and efficient. Download the Metro SP app for easy navigation. A single ride costs around $1. If you're taking buses, invest in a Bilhete Único card for seamless travel. Uber and 99 are reliable, but avoid unofficial taxis at airports! São Paulo is generally safe, but trust your instincts and avoid risky areas at night.

Is São Paulo Worth It?

Absolutely! São Paulo is perfect for the urban explorer, art lover, and foodie. Its sheer diversity means you’ll always find something that matches your vibe. It’s a place where you’ll feel both the energy of a bustling metropolis and the warmth of Brazilian culture. However, if you’re looking for typical beaches, this might not be your primary stop. Would I go back? In a heartbeat! The city constantly evolves, which means there's always a new corner to discover.
