Why I Love Calgary
Imagine standing on a street corner in Calgary and catching the faint scent of freshly grilled steak wafting through the crisp mountain air. That’s the moment I knew I was smitten with this city. Calgary is that rare blend of hearty Western charm and sleek urban cool. From the twang of cowboy boots at the Calgary Stampede to the soaring silhouettes of modern skyscrapers, everything about this place feels alive and invigorating. It's a city where you can sip craft beer after hiking the Rockies, and then sink into an artsy vibe at a local gallery. Trust me, there's something magnetic about this vibrant city that pulls you in.

Getting There
Getting to Calgary is a breeze. The Calgary International Airport (YYC) is your main entry point, and it offers plenty of options. From New York, you're looking at about a 5-hour flight. If you're flying from London, expect around 9 hours in the sky, with a direct flight usually being the cheapest option. Airlines like WestJet and Air Canada often have good deals. As for visas, if you’re from the US, UK, or Australia, you’ll need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) which you can easily apply for online before your trip.
Where to Stay
Budget (under $80/night)
You’ve got to check out the Wicked Hostels. It’s right near the heart of downtown and the vibe is laid-back and friendly—the perfect spot if you love meeting other travelers. They throw in breakfast, and there’s a kitchen if you’re in the mood to cook. Expect to pay about $40 CAD for a bed in a dorm. Check availability on Expedia
Mid-Range ($80-200/night)
The Alt Hotel Calgary East Village is a gem. Each room feels like a stylish urban loft, and the location is ideal—close to the Bow River Pathway and great eateries. You can grab a room here for around $120 CAD a night. Check availability on Expedia

My Favourite Things To Do
Explore the Calgary Stampede
One of my favourite things to do here is experience the Calgary Stampede. It’s more than a rodeo; it’s a ten-day cowboy extravaganza with live music, chuckwagon races, and greasy, delicious fair food. Feel the buzz of the crowd and the thrill of the rides—it's a must! Book with Viator
Wander through Prince’s Island Park
Wandering through Prince’s Island Park is a fresh-air delight. The peaceful trails along the Bow River make it perfect for a leisurely afternoon. You can even catch a live performance if you’re there in July. Bring a picnic and you’re set. Book with GetYourGuide
Visit the Glenbow Museum
The Glenbow Museum is where Calgary’s culture and history come alive. Explore Indigenous art, fascinating exhibitions, and so much more. I spent hours there and still wanted more. Book with Viator
>Where to EatYou have to try Charbar in East Village. The view of the river is amazing, and their Argentinian-style meat is melt-in-your-mouth good. Don’t miss their empanadas, trust me.
For a unique brunch, head to OEB Breakfast Co. The creative takes on eggs benedict will blow your mind. The Soul in a Bowl is legendary among locals and costs around $20 CAD.
Don’t leave without eating at Tubby Dog, an iconic spot for creative, over-the-top hot dogs. It’s quirky, fun, and absolutory delicious—a true Calgary experience on a budget.
>Honest Local TipsDress in Layers: The weather here can change in an instant. I learned the hard way when it was sunny one moment and chilly the next.
Calgary Transit App: Download it for easy navigation of buses and CTrains. It has real-time updates and route maps.
Skip the Rental Car: Parking downtown is tough and expensive. Use public transport or rent a bike instead.
Happy Hour Deals: Many restaurants offer great happy hour deals, perfect for tasting the local cuisine without breaking the bank.
Pack for the Stampede: If you’re visiting during the Stampede, embrace it! Cowboy boots, hats, and plaid might sound cliché, but joining in is part of the fun.
Beware of Tourist Traps: Places like Stephen Avenue can be a bit overpriced. Explore the Beltline area for more local flavors and a laid-back vibe.
Local Markets: Check out the Calgary Farmers' Market for fresh produce and unique local products. It's worth a visit even if you’re not buying.
>Getting AroundCalgary Transit is efficient and affordable. Grab a day pass for unlimited travel or use single tickets as needed. Bike rentals are also popular, with paths linking you to major attractions. Apps like Uber are available, but avoid using them during peak times to skip surge pricing. Always check for the exact fare beforehand to avoid scams and unexpected charges.
>Is Calgary Worth It?Absolutely! Calgary is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, culture lovers, and anyone looking for vibrant city life mixed with rugged nature. The friendly locals make you feel at home, and there’s always something new to discover. If endless nightlife or beach vibes are your things, Calgary might not be a fit. But if rolling foothills, the spirit of adventure, and a touch of cowboy culture sound appealing, you’ll love it as much as I do. Would I go back? In a heartbeat!
