Why I Love Toronto

Imagine strolling down a street where languages from all over the globe mix into a vibrant symphony. That’s Toronto for you. It’s the eclectic food scene that first reeled me in, from the mouth-watering dim sum in Chinatown to authentic Italian in Little Italy. And then there’s the skyline view from the Toronto Islands at sunset — it’s pure magic. The city feels like an ever-evolving canvas, a place where every neighborhood tells a different story. Whether it’s catching live music on Queen Street or exploring quirky museums, Toronto always has something up its sleeve.

Quick Facts

Toronto

Getting There

Toronto is incredibly accessible by air, with Pearson International Airport (YYZ) serving as a major hub. If you're flying from London, it’s about a 7-hour flight with direct options on Air Canada or British Airways. From New York, you can be there in under 2 hours with flights from Delta or Porter Airlines, which conveniently lands in downtown’s Billy Bishop Airport. If you’re coming from Dubai, it’s around a 14-hour journey. Visitors from most countries will need an eTA or visa to enter Canada, so be sure to check your specific requirements ahead of time.

>Where to Eat

You have to try the poutine at Poutini’s. It’s the comfort food dream — fries smothered in cheese curds and gravy. Don’t leave without eating at Terroni for unforgettable pasta in an atmospheric downtown location. And for a fancy brunch, head to The One Eighty. With skyline views, it’s a treat worth its price tag.

>Honest Local Tips

Enjoy a free concert: During the summer, the Toronto Music Garden hosts free classical music concerts. It's a hidden gem you’ll love.

Union-Pearson Express can save you money: Instead of a pricey taxi, take the UP Express from Pearson Airport to downtown in just 25 minutes.

Late-night cravings: 7 West Café is a 24-hour spot perfect for night owls. Their menu is diverse, and they serve breakfast all day.

Watch out for streetcar zones: Toronto’s streetcars can be tricky. Always check which zones your ticket covers to avoid fines.

Mistake I made: I once underestimated the weather. Toronto can be unpredictable, so layer up, especially in spring and fall.

Explore beyond downtown: Neighborhoods like Kensington Market and The Annex have unique vibes and fewer tourists.

Navigating PATH: Downtown Toronto has an underground walkway called PATH. It’s brilliant for avoiding the cold, but I got lost, so carry a map or use Google Maps!

>Getting Around

Toronto’s TTC system is straightforward, with subways, streetcars, and buses. Get a Presto card for convenience. Uber is readily available, but bikes are a fun alternative in warmer months. Be wary of taxi scams — confirm fares beforehand and ensure the meter is running.

>Is Toronto Worth It?

Absolutely, Toronto is perfect if you’re into multicultural experiences and vibrant city life. It’s got bustling neighborhoods, diverse food, and cultural offerings galore. Nature lovers might crave more green spaces but can visit nearby parks or the islands. Would I go back? In a heartbeat. There’s always something new to discover!
