Ottawa

Why I Love Ottawa

The very first snowfall I experienced in Ottawa had me enchanted. I stood on Parliament Hill, with a fluff of snowflakes dusting my nose, feeling like I was in a snow globe. This city is incredibly special to me because it seamlessly combines the pulse of a metropolitan city with the peacefulness of nature. Imagine ice skating on the Rideau Canal in the winter, or enjoying a leisurely stroll down Sussex Drive in the fall with the kaleidoscope of leaves crunching underfoot. Ottawa’s warmth isn't just in its winters — it's in the welcoming smiles of locals and the vibrant cultural mosaic that makes this city truly captivating.

Quick Facts

Ottawa

Getting There

Flying into Ottawa is fairly straightforward. The Ottawa International Airport (YOW) is well-served, with direct flights from major cities like Toronto, New York, and Chicago. From London, you’re looking at around a 9-hour journey, usually with one stop in Toronto or Montreal. European travelers might want to check Air Canada and British Airways for competitive rates. Visitors from the U.S. can find good deals with United and Delta. As for visas, U.S. citizens typically don't need one, but make sure to check the latest entry requirements if you're from elsewhere.

Where to Stay

Budget (under $80/night)

For a comfy and budget-friendly spot, I always recommend the HI Ottawa Jail Hostel. It's literally a converted jailhouse, so it’s packed with character (and maybe a ghost or two, who knows?). Ideal for solo travelers or anyone with a taste for the quirky. Plus, it’s right downtown! Check availability on Expedia

Mid-Range ($80-200/night)

You can’t go wrong with the Alt Hotel Ottawa. This place is chic without being stuffy and strikes the perfect balance between price and comfort. The modern decor and brilliant location make it perfect for anyone looking to explore the downtown core easily. Check availability on Expedia

Luxury ($200+/night)

For luxury, Chateau Laurier is the dream. Think historical elegance with all the splendor you’d expect from a landmark hotel. It’s an experience, really, and ideal for those wanting a historic touch with their comfort. It’s where I treat myself when I'm feeling fancy! Check availability on Expedia

>My Favourite Things To Do

Skate on the Rideau Canal

One of my favorite activities is gliding along the Rideau Canal in the winter. It’s the world’s largest skating rink, and nothing feels more quintessentially Canadian. Warm up with a BeaverTail pastry afterward! Book with Viator

Explore Parliament Hill

I love taking a tour of Parliament Hill. The history, the architecture, and the stunning views of the Ottawa River make it a must-visit. Catch the Northern Lights show in summer — it’s breathtaking. Book with GetYourGuide

Visit ByWard Market

Strolling around ByWard Market is a delight. You can shop for handcrafted goodies, grab fresh produce, or just people-watch from a cozy cafe. The food stalls are unbeatable for a quick, tasty bite. Book with Viator

>Where to Eat

You have to try El Camino on Elgin Street for mouthwatering tacos and a lively vibe. The fish tacos are a must! Roughly $15-$25 per person.

Don't leave without eating at BeaverTails. Seriously, these fried dough pastries are legendary. Perfect for a sweet treat while exploring the ByWard Market. Around $5.

For a chic dinner, restaurant e18hteen offers exquisite fine dining in a historic, restored building. Their seafood dishes are sublime. Expect to spend about $40-$80 per person.

>Honest Local Tips

Consider the weather: Ottawa’s winters are intense. Make sure to pack proper winter gear if you’re visiting between December and March. It’s no joke!

Free museums on Thursdays: If you’re visiting on a Thursday evening, several museums offer free admission after 5 pm. Great way to binge on culture!

Explore the neighborhoods: Don’t just stick to downtown. The Glebe and Westboro have charming boutiques, cafes, and a real local feel.

Avoid rush hour: Traffic can be a pain during rush hours. Aim to travel mid-morning or later in the evening to avoid getting stuck.

Check festival schedules: Ottawa loves its festivals! From Winterlude to Bluesfest, there’s often something happening. Check online to see if any align with your visit.

Local transit app: Download the OC Transpo app – it’s invaluable for navigating bus and light rail schedules.

Public transport quirks: The bus system uses paper transfers instead of digital ones, which I didn’t expect, so hold onto your ticket!

>Getting Around

Ottawa has an efficient public transport system operated by OC Transpo, including buses and the light rail. A single fare is about $3.75 CAD, and you can buy tickets at most stations. For short distances, walking or renting a BIXI bike is enjoyable and safe. I've never felt uneasy in Ottawa, but standard city smarts apply — keep your belongings secure and be aware in crowded places. Avoid unlicensed taxis, and download transport apps like Uber and Lyft for reliable rides.

>Is Ottawa Worth It?

Absolutely! Ottawa is perfect for anyone who loves a blend of history, culture, and outdoor activities. It’s ideal for travelers who appreciate museums, festivals, and picturesque landscapes. Families, couples, and solo adventurers will all find plenty to love. If you’re not keen on cold weather, plan to visit in the spring or fall. I’d go back in a heartbeat for the seasonal festivals and the delightful local vibe. You might not find the nightlife as vibrant as bigger cities like Toronto, but for everything else, Ottawa ticks all the boxes.
